Use your iPhone as a magnifier to read small print
Switch the mode at the top left to Magnifier. The torch turns on and the zoom jumps to 2.5x, ready for small print. Tap the text to focus, zoom further if needed, and tap Freeze to read it from a still picture rather than a shaking one.
When a magnifier app helps
Ingredient lists, medicine leaflets, a serial number on the back of a router, a restaurant bill in dim light, the small print on a contract. A phone is always in your pocket; a magnifying glass almost never is. In practice, it gets reached for most often on the back of packaging, more than for anything planned in advance.
Your iPhone already includes Apple's own Magnifier app. Binoculars does the same kind of job, adds the freeze frame for reading a still picture, and doubles as the same zoom camera for things far away.
How to magnify text on iPhone camera
- Open the app and tap the mode switch at the top left, or open Settings with the gear icon and pick Magnifier under Mode.
- The torch comes on and the zoom jumps to 2.5x. A short hint confirms: Magnifier on — point at small text, torch lit.
- Hold the phone a hand's width above the text. If it's blurry, move it slightly further away: phone cameras can't focus very close.
- Tap the text on screen. A focus square appears and focus and exposure lock on that spot for 3 seconds.
- Zoom further with the slider, a preset or a pinch if the letters are still too small.
- Tap Freeze and pinch the still picture to read comfortably without holding the phone steady.
What the Magnifier mode changes
| Binoculars | Magnifier | |
|---|---|---|
| Torch | Turns off | Turns on |
| Zoom on switching | 1x | 2.5x (or your plan's limit if lower) |
| Zoom range | Same | Same |
| Freeze, focus, save, share | Same | Same |
Same camera engine underneath, just a different starting point. The bolt icon still turns the torch off if it causes glare.
Tips for reading small text
- Glossy labels reflect the torch straight back at you — tilt the phone slightly so the bright spot slides off the words, or switch the torch off in a well-lit room.
- Don't press the phone against the page; a bit of distance plus zoom focuses sharper than getting too close, which is the opposite of what feels natural at first.
- Tap to focus again after you move. The lock only lasts 3 seconds before the camera goes back to automatic.
- For a long label, freeze once and drag across the still instead of walking the phone line by line.
- Save the frozen photo if you'll need the text later — a Wi-Fi password, a model number, whatever it is.
