Chess Clock: questions and honest answers
Short answers to what players ask about the Chess Clock app before and after they install it, including the things it does not do.
Which time controls does it handle?
Four timing modes: Sudden Death, Fischer Increment, Bronstein Delay and Simple Delay (US delay). Blitz 3+2, Blitz 5+0, Rapid 10+0 and Classical 90+30 are built in, and you can save your own with any base time up to 180 minutes 55 seconds and an increment or delay of 0 to 60 seconds.
Does the clock drift?
No. Every reading is computed from timestamps rather than counted ticks, so a call or switching apps cannot gain or lose time. The running clock still counts while you are away, the same as a physical clock would, so pause before you step out, not after.
Someone tapped the wrong half. Can we fix it?
A tap on the half whose clock is not running does nothing, so most wrong-half taps need no fix. If the player on move tapped by mistake, the undo icon reverses that tap: time, move count and turn. Undo goes back one step only.
Can both players read the screen?
Yes. The far player's half is rotated 180 degrees, so each player reads their own time the right way up from their side of the board. Each half also has its own move counter.
Does it check whether a move is legal?
No. It is a clock for over-the-board play: it times turns and counts moves. It does not see the pieces, detect checkmate or record notation.
What is free and what does Pro add?
The four timing modes, the presets, your own saved controls and the game history are all free. There are four board themes and four flag sounds in total; Classic and Classic Beep are free, and Pro adds the other three of each (Walnut, Marble, Neon; Wood Clack, Bell Chime, Digital Blip) and removes ads.
Do ads show up during a game?
No. The clock screen has no banner and full-screen ads never appear while a game is on screen. In the free version a full-screen ad can follow a finished game, and one can appear when you return to the app, at most once every 4 hours.
What happens when a player runs out of time?
That half turns dark red with FLAG, the opponent is shown as the winner on time, the flag sound plays once if Sound is on, and the game is saved to History. The app cannot tell whether the position should be a draw instead; settle that with your opponent or the arbiter.
Can I use it in a rated tournament?
It is meant for casual and club play. Tournaments normally use the organiser's own clocks and rules, so ask the arbiter. It also cannot run multi-stage controls such as 90 minutes for 40 moves followed by extra time.
Can I give one player more time?
No. Both players always get the same time control, so time odds for a stronger player are not possible.
Can Black start the clock?
The first tap on either half starts White's clock, so in practice Black can press to start it, as in over-the-board play. There is no option to have Black move first.
Is every game saved automatically?
Only games that end on time are saved on their own. When you leave with the X, you pick a result to save the game or choose Discard Game. Reset and games with no completed move are not saved.
What if the app is closed in the middle of a game?
The home list shows Resume Unfinished Game, which reopens it paused at the stored times. The move times from before the interruption are not carried into History, and time that passed after the app went to the background is not counted.
Can I export my games or get a PGN?
No. History stays on your device and there is no export, sharing or PGN. You can attach notes and photos of your scoresheet to each saved game.
Why would it ask for my location?
Only if you tap Add Location on a saved game, to note where you played. It takes one reading and stops. It is never used during a game.
Does it tick or beep on every move?
No. Each accepted tap gives a short vibration if Haptics is on, and the only sound is a single alert when a flag falls. You can turn that alert off with the Sound switch in Settings.
Can I use it for games other than chess?
Yes, for any game where two players take turns. The fields say White and Black but you can type any names, and each player gets their own time bank.
Is there a light mode?
No. The app uses a dark appearance only, which also keeps the display easy on the eyes across a table.
