How do you put a Zulu time widget on your iPhone?
E6B Calc has a free widget called Zulu Clock that shows UTC as hours and minutes with a Z, in three shapes: a small Home Screen square, a rectangle on the Lock Screen and a single line above the Lock Screen clock. It needs no setup and no network, but it has no seconds and no date.
Adding it
Install the app first; the widget is listed under its name in the gallery. Nothing to set up afterwards.
- Home Screen: touch and hold an empty spot, tap the + button, search for E6B and pick Zulu Clock, then add the small size.
- Lock Screen: touch and hold the lock screen, tap Customize, tap the row under the time (or the line above it for the single-line size), and pick Zulu Clock from the list.
The gallery description reads "Current UTC time." That is the whole product.
What each size shows
| Size | Where | Shows |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Home Screen | ZULU caption, large time with Z, your local time underneath |
| Rectangular | Lock Screen | ZULU caption and the time with Z |
| Inline | Lock Screen, above the clock | The time with Z, nothing else |
No medium or large size, and no watch complication.
The time is hours and minutes only, in UTC, whatever zone the phone is in. The widget gets a fresh entry for each minute and iOS decides when to draw them, so on a locked phone it can lag, as lock screen widgets do.
The surprise: 12-hour digits in a US region
The code formats UTC with a fixed two-digit hour and no AM/PM marker, and the comment next to it says the clock is always 24-hour. That same formatting, run with a US region, prints 02:13 at 14:13 UTC; with a UK or German region it prints 14:13. So with a US region the widget can show 02:13Z at 14:13Z, with no AM/PM to warn you. If your region is the US, check it against the Clocks screen below, or switch Region in Settings, General, Language & Region to a 24-hour one.
When you need more than the widget
Open Clocks under Time in the app for seconds, the date, and Zulu, Local and an optional Departure field side by side. Add the departure zone with Set departure time zone.
The other two widgets in the same gallery, Crosswind and Density Altitude, need the one-time E6B Pro unlock and a saved Home Field, otherwise they show "Unlock E6B Pro in the app to use this widget." The Zulu one never does.
