Do hidden camera detector apps really work?

Partly, and that answer is the honest one. A phone app can find cameras announcing themselves on shared Wi-Fi or over Bluetooth, and it can help your eyes spot lenses with a torch. It cannot sweep radio signals, see 940 nm infrared, or find a camera that is simply offline. Any app claiming otherwise is overselling itself.

Can an iPhone detect hidden cameras?

Some of them, under the right conditions. An iPhone has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a camera, a torch — four tools, each catching one kind of camera and missing the others entirely. PrivacyScan leans on all four and tells you exactly where each one gives up.

Method by method

What each phone-based method can and cannot find
MethodWhat it can findWhat it misses
Wi-Fi discovery (Bonjour)Cameras on the same Wi-Fi that announce video services such as RTSP or ONVIFCameras on another network, behind hotel client isolation, offline, or announcing nothing camera-like
Bluetooth scanNearby devices advertising over Bluetooth, and names containing camera wordsCameras with Bluetooth off, unnamed devices, neutral names
Torch and your eyesLenses in view, as a small bright reflection in the darkCameras fully hidden behind an object; it takes patience
Physical inspectionAnything you can see or feel, including offline camerasOnly what you actually check
Infrared through the phone cameraNear-infrared around 850 nm, on some cameras940 nm, the wavelength most covert cameras use
RF sweepNothing: an iPhone has no radio receiver an app can useEverything
Magnetometer meterMetal and magnets, of any kindTells you nothing specific about cameras

Is there an RF detector app for iPhone?

Not a real one, no. A genuine RF detector is a radio receiver measuring transmissions across a range of frequencies, and that hardware is simply not exposed to apps on an iPhone. A spinning radar screen or a jumpy needle in some other app is an animation, or it is reading the compass sensor, which reacts near any metal, not just cameras.

There is no radar in PrivacyScan, no signal meter, no magnetometer mode — that was a deliberate choice, not an oversight. The app's own banner says outright that it cannot detect RF signals, offline cameras, or anything not advertising on the network.

How accurate is a hidden camera detector app?

No honest number exists here — what a phone can find depends entirely on the camera, the network, the room itself. What you can actually know is how each result gets produced. In PrivacyScan, specifically:

  • A Camera Score comes from the services a device announces and the words in its name. A doorbell or video recorder scores as high as a camera.
  • Camera words in a name add 40 points, so a smart display with a brand word can reach 50, Medium, while a real camera with a neutral name that only offers a web page scores 10, Low.
  • The Bluetooth flag is a text match, so a smart ring can be flagged and a camera with a neutral name will not be.
  • An empty scan on hotel Wi-Fi is normal and proves nothing.

Read every result as a lead, never a verdict.

What a hidden camera detector app that actually works looks like

  • It tells you which method each result comes from.
  • It shows what it found: device names, services, signal strength, not just a green tick.
  • It sends you to look physically, with a checklist of where.
  • It says clearly what it cannot detect.

The app's own Privacy Guide walks through all of this: open Settings, tap Read Privacy Guide, then read What iPhone Can Detect and Debunking Privacy App Claims.

Questions and answers

Is there an app to detect hidden cameras?
There are apps that help, not apps that solve it. They find cameras announcing themselves on your Wi-Fi or over Bluetooth, and help your eyes look for lenses. None find offline cameras, so the physical check is never optional.
Can a phone detect RF signals?
Not through any app, no. An iPhone has no radio receiver an app is allowed to use for sweeping transmissions.
Why does PrivacyScan not have a radar screen?
Because on an iPhone it could only ever be an animation or a compass reading dressed up to look like radar — and that would actively mislead you.
Is PrivacyScan free?
Yes, free to download, and every tool runs without a paywall. The optional upgrade just removes the ads.
