How to Check a Hotel Room or Airbnb for Hidden Cameras Without Wi-Fi

You don't need the Wi-Fi password to do most of the check. Scan Bluetooth while you walk the room, go through the 29 usual hiding spots, then sweep them with a torch in the dark. The network scan is the one step that needs you to join the Wi-Fi — add it once you have the password. About fifteen minutes in all.

Do this before you unpack, while the room is still exactly as you found it — once your bags are open everywhere, you stop looking as carefully. Grab the Wi-Fi password first: ask the host in a rental, or get through the hotel login page.

Scan Bluetooth while you walk the room

  1. Tap Scan BLE and walk slowly through every room, including the bathroom.
  2. Watch for the SUSPICIOUS tag and for a signal that gets stronger near one object.
  3. Tap Stop BLE when you have covered the space.

Check the common hiding spots

  1. Open Inspect and tap New Inspection.
  2. Type a name in Location name (e.g. Hotel Room 204) and tap Start.
  3. Open each group and tick each item as you check it. Every item has a short tip on what to look for.

29 spots total, and the header tracks your progress as you go, rounding the percentage down each time:

Checklist progress as the app shows it
Items tickedHeader textProgress
11 of 29 items checked3%
1010 of 29 items checked34%
1515 of 29 items checked51%
2020 of 29 items checked68%
2828 of 29 items checked96%

Everything you tick is saved locally, so pausing halfway through to answer the door is fine — Recent Activity on the Scan tab remembers exactly how far you got.

Flashlight and lens reflections

Lights off, Camera Tools, Lens Finder, Start, then Torch On. Go back over the high-risk items from your checklist specifically, looking for a tiny, steady point of light rather than a scatter.

What changes once you join the Wi-Fi

  1. Join the Wi-Fi, open PrivacyScan and tap Scan Network on the Scan tab.
  2. Wait about 8 seconds. Devices are sorted by camera score.
  3. Tap anything marked High or Medium and note its name and IP Address.

A High score just means that device advertises services IP cameras use. Treat it as a lead, not proof — a video doorbell scores exactly the same way.

Hotel room

Hotel Wi-Fi tends to isolate guests from each other, so do not be surprised when the Wi-Fi scan comes back nearly empty. That is normal, not reassuring. Weight the Bluetooth scan and the physical check more heavily here.

Airbnb or holiday rental

A home network usually surfaces everything that announces itself, so this scan actually earns its keep here. A host can still run cameras on a separate network, though. Check the booking listing for disclosed outdoor or doorbell cameras and compare that against what you find — and know the platform's own rules on this.

Why a clean scan doesn't prove anything

Four green scans do not add up to proof. A device with no Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth and no visible lens stays hidden from every single one of these tools, so a careful physical look still beats a clean-looking screen.

A camera that records to a memory card, or sits on a second network you can't see, leaves nothing for an app to pick up. That's why the checklist and the torch sweep matter more than any green screen, with or without Wi-Fi.

If you find something

  • Do not touch, unplug or cover it yet.
  • Photograph it with the iPhone Camera app. PrivacyScan does not save photos or reports.
  • Leave if you feel unsafe.
  • Contact the hotel management or the booking platform. In a serious case, the local police.

Questions and answers

Can I check for hidden cameras with my phone in airplane mode?
Yes, as long as you turn Bluetooth back on: the Bluetooth scan, the checklist and the torch sweep don't need any network. Only the Wi-Fi scan needs you to join the room's Wi-Fi.
How long does it take to check a hotel room for hidden cameras?
Fifteen minutes, give or take, for an ordinary room — under a minute for the two scans combined, the rest spent on the physical check and the torch sweep.
Can I scan an Airbnb without the Wi-Fi password?
Not the Wi-Fi scan, no — it only sees the network you have actually joined. Bluetooth, the checklist and Lens Finder all still work fine without it.
The scan found nothing. Is the room safe?
It means no device on that Wi-Fi announced a camera service, and nothing nearby over Bluetooth had a camera-style name. Offline cameras and cameras on a separate network are still fully possible, so finish the physical check regardless.
Does the app save a report I can send to the host?
No, it only keeps your checklist progress on the phone. If you need evidence to send anyone, take your own photos.
