How to scan a page with the document scanner and have it read aloud
Tap the + button in Text Reader Narrator and choose Scan with Camera (OCR) to open Apple's document scanner and capture one or more pages; save, and the recognised text drops into the Reader ready to play. Scanning needs Premium, and the recognition itself runs entirely on your device, not a server.
When scanning is the right tool
Scanning is for anything that only exists on paper: a book page, a letter, a printed handout, a leaflet, a menu. It also rescues a scanned PDF, which has no text inside at all — print or display that page and scan it like paper.
If the text is already digital — an email, a web page, a text-based PDF — import or paste it instead. It'll be exact, where recognised text can carry small mistakes.
Steps: scan a page and listen
- Open the Reader tab and tap the + button to open Import.
- Tap Scan with Camera (OCR). First time, allow camera access; it's used only for this.
- Apple's document scanner opens. Hold the phone over the page until the edges catch, or snap the shot yourself. Keep scanning to add more pages before saving.
- Tap Save in the scanner. The app reads the text on the device and saves it as a document in Documents.
- Back in the Reader, the recognised text is already loaded. Skim it once for obvious mistakes before pressing Play.
- Press Play to listen, each word highlighted as it goes.
Tips for a clean scan
- Flat page, even light, no shadow from your hand or the phone.
- Fill the frame with the page and keep the phone parallel to it.
- One column at a time gives the cleanest text. For newspapers or two-column books, scan and listen column by column.
- Printed text comes out far cleaner than handwriting — don't expect much from a handwritten note.
- Latin-script languages give the most reliable results; the scan has no language setting, so other scripts can come out patchy.
Where scanning stops
- Live camera only. You can't point it at a photo already sitting in your library.
- It's a two-step process, not instant: scan, save, then press Play — there's no live read-as-you-point mode.
- Scanning is Premium. The free version still reads anything you type or paste, no limit on that beyond the daily character cap.
Nothing gets uploaded anywhere. Recognition runs on the device with Apple's Vision framework, and the whole thing works without a connection.
