Why is my Apple Watch wallpaper not syncing, and what do I check first?
In most cases the picture never reached your Photos library, so there is nothing for the watch to sync. Check that first, then the album, then the Photos face in Apple's Watch app.
What looks like a sync failure can simply be an export refused by iOS. Watch Faces still says Image saved to Photos. even when the Photos library is empty, for example if photo access was denied earlier and forgotten about.
For image and Live Photo exports, Watch Faces has no part in the watch side. It makes the image on the iPhone and drops it in Photos; Apple's Watch app does the rest. So the real question is where it broke. There are five places to look.
Check in this order
- Open the Photos app and look at Recents. If the picture is not there, the watch has nothing to sync. In the iOS Settings app, open Watch Faces, then Photos, and allow adding photos. Then export again.
- Did the export actually run? Free users get 5 per calendar month. On a wallpaper's detail screen in the Gallery tab, Remaining exports this month: shows what is left, and at zero you get Export Limit Reached with Upgrade to Premium. The counter resets in the next calendar month, not after 30 days.
- Gallery wallpapers are different from designer exports. The download button only opens the iOS share sheet, and nothing is saved until you pick the save-image option there. Closing the sheet without picking save-image leaves nothing saved, even though the quota has already been spent.
- Put the picture in an album of its own. In the Watch app, set the Photos face to use that album rather than Recents or a big library, and make sure the iPhone and the watch are paired and nearby.
- If the face shows an old picture, re-select the album in the Watch app, or change the face to another and back. That is crude, but it works.
Two things that look like a sync fault but are not
Two clocks, one frozen in the picture and one live on top. Not a sync fault. You exported with Time Position set to Top or Center, so a time was drawn into the image and froze. Go to Time, choose Hidden, and run Export to Photos again. It costs one more of the monthly exports.
A picture that looks cut off is just the Photos face cropping. The watch screen is taller than it is wide, so a landscape photo loses its sides. For a 4032×3024 photo on the 45mm preset the app keeps 2474 of the 4032 pixels across, 61.4%, and all 3024 down. Crop in Photos first if the subject sits near an edge.
Live Photos that will not move
If you made the picture with Save as Live Photo and it sits still, check the message first. Photos access is needed to save the Live Photo. means the permission is missing. Otherwise the Live Photo is saved, and the app's own message says it animates on wrist raise, and its hint says to tap the face on the watch to play it. The clip is 3 seconds, silent, at most 30 frames per second.
| What you see | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Image not in Photos at all | iOS photo access for Watch Faces, or no exports left |
| Image in Photos, not on the watch | Album selection in the Watch app, pairing |
| Two clocks on the watch | Time Position was not Hidden |
| Picture cropped at the sides | Normal: crop in Photos first |
| Live Photo is still | Not tapped, or made without Use as animated face |
Free and Premium act the same here. Premium only lifts the monthly cap and adds a 792×968 @2x image for the 45mm preset.
