Does FieldGrid work with no signal?
Your position does. GPS comes from satellites, so the grid, the compass, the waypoints and the tools keep working with no bars at all. The map tiles do not, because the base map is Apple Maps and there is no offline map download. Track recording also keeps working offline, but it is part of Pro.
How accurate is the MGRS grid in FieldGrid?
As accurate as the phone's GPS fix, which the app shows as plus or minus metres next to the grid. The grid itself is always 8 digits, a 10 m square, and FieldGrid never shows a 1 m (10-digit) grid. Under trees or between buildings the real error can be well over 10 m, so watch the accuracy figure, not the number of digits.
Can I get a 6-digit or 10-digit grid?
No, FieldGrid always shows 8 digits. To give a 6-digit grid, drop the last digit of each half yourself: 7205 8108 becomes 720 810. A 10-digit grid would claim 1 m precision that a phone fix cannot back up anyway.
Does it show degrees, minutes and seconds?
No. It shows MGRS, UTM, decimal degrees to 5 places and a Google Maps link, and it accepts MGRS or decimal lat/long when you type a coordinate. Older store text mentioned DMS, but it is not a format in the app.
Do the grid lines on the map match my paper map?
No. The overlay called MGRS grid draws latitude and longitude lines that change spacing with zoom, not the 1 km MGRS or UTM squares printed on a topographic map. Plot from the grid numbers at the top of the screen or from the crosshair readout.
Is the compass a real lensatic compass?
No. It reads the phone's magnetometer and shows true heading in degrees and NATO mils, with no declination setting and no sighting wire. It is useful to check a direction; keep a real compass for land navigation and keep the phone away from metal, magnets and vehicles.
Does the pace counter count my steps?
No. You tap the big button every time your own pace count reaches the distance you set, 100 m by default. The app multiplies taps by that distance and uses the mission clock to show your speed. The count resets when you leave the screen.
Can I get my waypoints out of FieldGrid?
Yes, as GPX 1.1, which opens in the usual mapping tools. Free users choose Select in the Waypoints menu, pick the points and tap Share; the one-tap Export all (GPX) is part of Pro. Recorded tracks export as GPX too, also with Pro.
Can I import a GPX file?
Yes, waypoints only. Open the .gpx file with FieldGrid from Files, AirDrop or another app's share sheet, then pick the points in the Import GPX sheet. Tracks and routes inside the file are ignored, and free users can import up to their waypoint allowance.
Does FieldGrid send my position anywhere?
No position reaches us, ever. Waypoints and tracks sit on the device and go only to your own paired Apple Watch; there's no account to send them to. The free build does talk to Google's ad servers, which is why you get the tracking prompt and a consent form. Say no to both and the app works exactly the same.
Why does FieldGrid ask for location all the time?
It asks for Always only when a Pro user starts recording a track, so the track keeps recording with the screen off. For the grid, waypoints and tools, permission while using the app is enough.
Is the danger close table authoritative?
No, and the app itself says so, right under WHAT THIS IS NOT on that screen. It's a fixed reference table for orientation and training, nothing more; it doesn't calculate anything from your waypoints. Use the tables and procedures your unit actually issues.
Can I use the 9-line MEDEVAC, CAS and SALUTE screens for real missions?
Treat them as training aids. They are text templates that insert your grid and let you copy or share the result, but some choices still appear in Spanish, and the SALUTE time carries a Z while using the phone's local time. Follow your unit's formats and procedures.
What does the free version include, and what does Pro add?
Free: all coordinate formats, the compass, the pace counter, Sun & Moon, the report templates, the widget, the Apple Watch app for 5 minutes per session and 5 waypoints, with ads. Pro adds unlimited waypoints, track recording, export of all waypoints to GPX, unlimited watch use and no ads. It comes as monthly, yearly or a one-time lifetime purchase.
What ads does the free version show?
A full-screen ad when you open the app or come back to it (at most once every 4 minutes), a full-screen ad after a GPX import, and an optional short video you can choose to watch for one extra waypoint slot. There are no banners, and any Pro purchase removes all ads.
Is there a widget?
Yes, FieldGrid Coords for the Home Screen and Lock Screen, free. It shows the last position the app saw rather than taking its own GPS fix, and marks it Stale after 10 minutes; open the app to refresh it.
Does it sync with iCloud or run on Mac or Android?
No. FieldGrid is for iPhone and iPad with a companion Apple Watch app; there is no Mac or Android version and no iCloud sync. Your waypoints are only backed up as part of your normal device backup, so export a GPX file if you want a copy elsewhere.
Why are the map units only metric?
FieldGrid follows the military and grid convention: metres, kilometres, km/h and altitude in metres above sea level. MGRS and UTM are metre-based systems, so there is no feet or miles setting.
