How do I save GPS coordinates on my iPhone?
Tap WP+ on the Map tab and FieldGrid drops a waypoint at your exact GPS position right then; press and hold it instead and you can save one by typing a coordinate or tapping the map. Every saved point keeps a name, category and note, and you can copy, share or export it as GPX the moment you need those numbers somewhere else.
A map pin isn't really yours
Drop a pin in a generic maps app and it's tied to that app and that account, not to you. A FieldGrid waypoint is just a number you own outright: a name, a category, a note, a live distance and bearing back to it from wherever you're standing right now, and something you can hand to someone else as text or a file. That matters the moment you want to find the same spot again next season, pass it to someone without a smartphone, or keep any record at all once the trip's over.
Save your current position as a waypoint
- Open FieldGrid, allow location, and wait on the Map tab until the accuracy next to your grid settles.
- Press WP+ at the bottom of the screen. FieldGrid saves a waypoint at your exact position with an automatic name (WP-001, WP-002...).
- Open the Waypoints tab, tap the new entry and give it a real Name and a Category (General, OP, LZ, HQ, CP, Rally, contact, hazard, medic or supply).
- Tap Save.
Saving a coordinate without going there
Someone reads you coordinates over the phone or the radio. You don't have to walk to that spot just to save it.
- Go to Waypoints and tap +.
- The sheet that opens has a selector at the top: Position, Manual, On map.
- Leave it on Position to use your own GPS fix (Current position), switch to Manual to type a coordinate (MGRS or decimal "lat, lon"), or switch to On map and use Open crosshair on map / At the crosshair (map centre) to drop it where the map is centred.
- For a typed coordinate, the hint under the Coordinate field reads Supported: MGRS, Lat/Lon (comma-separated decimals), and a live preview shows the grid as you type.
- Add a Name and Category, then Save.
Worked example: two saved points
Say you save "Camp" at the tent, walk to a spring, and save "Water" once you get there. FieldGrid works out the MGRS grid for each fix on its own, and back in the list it keeps the live distance and true bearing from wherever you are now to each saved point.
| Name | Category | MGRS grid |
|---|---|---|
| Camp | General | 19TCK 1615 0376 |
| Water | supply | 19TCK 1686 0443 |
Standing back at Camp, the Waypoints list shows Water at a bearing of 045° and a distance of 975 m, the same great-circle maths the app runs for any waypoint: true bearing off your current fix, distance straight from Core Location.
Getting a coordinate back out again
- Tap a saved grid in the Waypoints detail card to Copy it as text, or Share through the usual sheet.
- To hand over several at once, use Select in the Waypoints menu, pick the ones you want, and tap Share to send them as a GPX file; Export all (GPX) does every waypoint in one go, but that one's Pro.
- A teammate with FieldGrid opens that .gpx file (Files, AirDrop, any share sheet) and picks which points to bring in through the Import GPX sheet.
What's free and what Pro changes
- Free: up to 5 saved waypoints, plus one more, permanently, for every short rewarded ad you choose to watch.
- Pro, whether monthly, yearly or a one-time lifetime buy: unlimited waypoints, one-tap Export all (GPX), and nothing interrupting you with ads.
- No account, no iCloud sync. Waypoints live on the device and go only to your own paired Apple Watch. A device backup, or a GPX file you export yourself, is the only copy that exists outside the phone.
