FitterMaster questions, answered straight

Straight answers to what fitters and apprentices actually ask about FitterMaster, before they buy Pro and after, including the parts it doesn't do.

Does FitterMaster work offline?
The calculators and tables work with no connection at all, because the math runs on the phone. The app does check your Pro purchase with the App Store when it opens, and ads and purchases need internet. If you already own Pro and have no signal, it stays available from the last check.
Is FitterMaster a subscription?
No. Pro is a single one-time purchase that stays yours; there is no monthly fee and no free trial. You can restore it on a new iPhone with Restore Purchases in Settings or on the upgrade screen.
What exactly is free and what needs Pro?
Free: the Offset calculator at 45° with cut length, Pipe Data for both STD and Sch 40, Tape Math and Settings. Pro adds the other fitting angles, Odd-Angle Cut, Miter, Saddle & Lateral, Dummy Leg, the Takeout Chart, Flange & Bolt, the remaining schedules, My Spools, millimetres and no ads.
Is the metric mode complete?
It converts lengths, pipe data, bolt circles and torque: results in mm to the nearest 0.5 mm, weights in kg/m, torque in N·m. Some things stay imperial on purpose or by design: pipe sizes stay NPS, stud diameters stay inch fractions, the labels on the offset diagram stay in inches and the Tape Math lengths A and B are always feet and inches.
Where do the numbers come from?
Offsets, elbow cuts, miters and templates are plain trigonometry. Takeouts, flange bolting and pipe dimensions come from published ASME B16.9, B16.5 and B36.10 tables — we transcribed them and cross-checked every one against the printed tables ourselves; ASME has not reviewed or endorsed the app. Not every screen has a diagram: Odd-Angle Cut, the Takeout Chart, Pipe Data and the torque card are numbers only.
Does it replace the spec or the isometric?
No. It is a field calculator. The isometric, the piping spec, the fittings actually on the job and your foreman come first, and real fittings vary within their tolerance.
How accurate is the cut length?
The Cut Length is travel minus two takeouts minus two weld gaps, rounded to the nearest 1/16" (or 1/32" or 0.5 mm if you choose). It assumes the same fitting at both ends and the gap you entered. It does not add a saw-kerf or bevel allowance, so account for your own cutting method.
Which fitting angles does the Offset calculator offer?
5.625°, 11.25°, 22.5°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°. Only 45° is free; tapping another angle opens the upgrade screen. For a truly odd angle such as 33° you cut an ell down with Odd-Angle Cut, which takes any angle from 5° to 89°.
Why are takeouts at 22.5° or 30° not from a table?
Because there is no stocked B16.9 fitting at those angles. The app uses the geometry of an elbow cut down to that angle: radius × tan(angle ÷ 2), with a radius of 1.5 × NPS for long radius or 1.0 × NPS for short radius. At 90° and at 45° long radius it uses the published table instead.
Can I print the saddle or miter template?
No. The app shows 16 numbered cutbacks and a profile drawing, and you transfer them to a wrap-around or paper strip yourself. There is no PDF or print option.
Can I save my calculations?
With Pro, the Offset screen has a Save button that stores the result in My Spools with a name and notes. Only offsets can be saved, and a saved spool is a note: it cannot be reopened in the calculator or exported. Copy and Share send plain text from the offset, odd-angle, bolt-up and tape math results.
Should I use the torque values it shows?
Treat them as a starting guide, not the final word. They are computed for lubricated A193 B7 studs with K = 0.17, tightened to 50% of yield, and ignore the gasket type. Your gasket manufacturer's values, the site bolting procedure or the engineer's spec override them — we'd rather you argue with your foreman using the right number than trust ours blind.
Why does the app ask to track me?
The App Tracking Transparency prompt is only for the ads in the free version. If you say no, every calculator works the same and the ads are simply not personalised. Pro shows no ads at all.
How many ads does the free version show?
A banner at the bottom of the main screen, and a full-screen ad on every third time you open a free calculator. Buying Pro removes both.
Can I switch to 1/32" fractions?
Yes, for free. In Settings, under Display, set Fraction to 1/32". Lengths and templates then snap to thirty-seconds, while the entry steppers still move in sixteenths.
Does it handle socket-weld, threaded, copper or PVC pipe?
No. All the data is for butt-weld carbon-steel fittings, flanges and pipe. The offset geometry itself works for any pipe, but the takeouts it subtracts are butt-weld ells.
Does it calculate EMT conduit bends?
No. Conduit bending uses shrink and bender marks, which this app does not do. FitterMaster is for welded pipe and fittings.
Do my saved spools sync between devices?
No. Spools and settings live only on the iPhone you use; there is no account and no cloud sync. Deleting the app deletes them.
