Pipe schedule chart with ID and weight per foot for carbon-steel pipe
Pipe OD is fixed by the nominal size; the schedule sets the wall, and ID = OD − 2 × wall. 2" Sch 40 is 2.375" OD, 2.067" ID and 3.65 lb/ft. FitterMaster's Pipe Data shows OD, ID and weight per foot for NPS 1/8 to 24, free for STD and Sch 40.
How do NPS, OD and schedule fit together?
Nominal pipe size is a name, not a measurement, and apprentices are often surprised by that. From NPS 14 up the OD equals the nominal size; below that it does not (2" pipe is 2.375" OD). Every schedule of one size has the same OD, so it fits the same fittings, and a heavier schedule only moves the ID inward.
What is the steel pipe weight per foot formula?
Weight (lb/ft) = (OD − wall) × wall × 10.6802, with OD and wall in inches. That is the weight of empty carbon-steel pipe. For kg/m multiply by 1.48816; for mm multiply inches by 25.4.
How do you look it up in FitterMaster?
- Open Pipe Data under Reference.
- Pick the Schedule: Sch 10, STD, Sch 40, XS, Sch 80, Sch 160 or XXS. STD and Sch 40 are free; the others show a lock and open the upgrade screen.
- Read the table: NPS, OD, ID and lb/ft. Sizes not made in that schedule are left out.
- With Pro and Measurement System set to metric in Settings, the same table shows mm and kg/m.
Schedule 40 pipe dimensions: examples
| NPS | OD | ID | lb/ft | OD mm | ID mm | kg/m |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2" | 2.375" | 2.067" | 3.65 | 60.3 | 52.5 | 5.44 |
| 4" | 4.500" | 4.026" | 10.79 | 114.3 | 102.3 | 16.06 |
| 6" | 6.625" | 6.065" | 18.97 | 168.3 | 154.1 | 28.24 |
Check the 2" row by hand: wall 0.154", ID 2.375 − 0.308 = 2.067", weight (2.375 − 0.154) × 0.154 × 10.6802 = 3.65 lb/ft. Worth doing once on paper so you trust the screen after — it matches to the hundredth.
Heavier walls: Sch 80 (Pro)
| NPS | OD | ID | lb/ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2" | 2.375" | 1.939" | 5.02 |
| 4" | 4.500" | 3.826" | 14.98 |
STD vs Sch 40, XS vs Sch 80
- STD and Sch 40 are the same wall up to 10". From 12" up STD stays at 0.375" while Sch 40 keeps getting heavier: 12" STD has a 12.000" ID and 49.56 lb/ft, 12" Sch 40 an 11.938" ID and 53.53 lb/ft.
- XS and Sch 80 match up to 8". From 10" up XS stays at 0.500" wall.
What this chart does not cover
- Carbon steel to ASME B36.10 only: no stainless (B36.19), copper, PVC or tubing.
- Empty pipe weight only. Water or insulation weight is not added.
- Wall thickness is not shown as its own column; it is half of OD minus ID.
- No pressure ratings.
