How to get sand out of iPhone speakers
Let the sand dry, then run Smart Clean > Normal in iSpeaker Cleaner with the speaker facing down; the 165 and 220 Hz tones shake loose grains out of the grille. Grains packed into the mesh will not move that way, and for those a soft dry brush is the tool.
After a beach day, a bottom speaker can sound like it has a cold. Running Normal a few times over a sheet of paper catches a few grains and improves the sound only a little; a toothbrush does the rest. Expect the tone to get the loose part, not all of it.
Dry sand and wet sand are different problems
Dry sand moves. Wet sand clumps into a paste that sticks to the mesh and no tone will shift it, so let it dry first. If the phone also had salt water on it, run Water Ejection to clear the drops, wait until the grille is dry, then deal with the grains.
Shaking sand out with a tone
- Take the case off and wipe the outside with a dry cloth.
- Volume to maximum with the side buttons; the app cannot do that for you.
- Open Smart Clean, pick Normal, tap Start Cleaning.
- Hold the phone with the speaker end pointing down over a sheet of paper, so you can see what falls out.
- Run it twice. If the paper stays empty, stop; more runs will not help.
The cone pushes air through the grille, which lifts loose grains and lets them fall. It reaches nothing inside the phone and nothing in the charging port.
| Program | Tones | Level | Swings per run | Free? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | 165 and 220 Hz, 5 s each, 30 s | 70% | 5,775 | Yes, unlimited |
| Water | 80, 165, 200, 165, 80 Hz, 8 s each, 40 s | 80% | 5,520 | Yes, unlimited |
| Deep | 50, 165, 220, 330, 500 Hz, 10 s each, 50 s | 90% | 12,650 | Pro |
Deep shakes the cone more than twice as many times, but Pro is not worth buying for a bit of sand. Run Normal first and check the paper. Free users are also not limited here, unlike the 2 lifetime runs on the Water Ejection tab.
Brush what the tone leaves
- A clean dry toothbrush or a soft paintbrush, swept across the grille, never pressed into it.
- Dab the grille with a small piece of tape rolled sticky side out, if grains sit on the surface.
- Then run Normal once more to drop whatever the brush loosened.
Things not worth trying
- No pins or needles. The mesh behind the holes is thin.
- No compressed air or vacuum nozzle, which can drive grains further in.
- No blowing into the grille. Breath is damp and sand sticks to it.
- No hard shaking either; grains can end up deeper.
Sand in the charging port is a different job. The tone does nothing for it, and nothing should be pushed into a port; take it to a repair shop if a cable will not seat.
