Does PoolDose tell me how much to add, or just what is wrong?
It tells you how much. You enter the pool volume, what you measured and what you want, and it returns an amount of product: millilitres or litres for liquids, grams or kilograms for solids. In US units the same amounts appear in fluid ounces, gallons, ounces and pounds.
Does it know which chlorine I have?
It has five choices: liquid sodium hypochlorite at 15% or at 10%, calcium hypochlorite 65-70%, trichlor 90% and dichlor 56%. The maths is the same for all of them, active chlorine divided by the strength on the label. It does not model what trichlor does to stabilizer or what calcium hypochlorite does to hardness.
What is the water index for?
It is the Langelier Saturation Index. From pH, temperature, calcium hardness, alkalinity and stabilizer it says whether the water is aggressive (it eats surfaces), balanced or scaling (it deposits scale), and which of alkalinity, pH or hardness is outside range first.
Is the pool volume just length by width by depth?
For a rectangle with one depth, yes. For a sloped floor it averages the shallow and deep ends, which fits a straight slope. Oval and round use the area formulas, kidney takes 85% of the bounding rectangle, and stepped-bottom asks you to type the average depth.
How accurate are the doses?
They are flat trade rates, for example 15 g of sodium bisulfate per cubic metre per 0.1 pH. Real water differs with alkalinity, temperature, sun and bathers. Treat the result as a starting amount, add part of it, circulate and re-test.
Can I follow the numbers blindly?
No, and the app tells you so. The product label wins every time. The order matters too: alkalinity, then pH, then chlorine, then stabilizer.
Which units does it use?
Metric (metres, cubic metres, °C, grams, millilitres) or US (feet, gallons, °F, ounces, fluid ounces). Pick one in Settings > Units; switching converts the numbers you already typed. Salt is in g/l in metric and in ppm in US.
Why does it ask for camera access?
Only for Scan test strip in the Log tab. You photograph a wet strip, drag three circles onto the pads and the app estimates chlorine, pH and alkalinity. The photo is read on the phone and is not saved in the log.
How accurate is the strip reader?
It matches each pad to the nearest of six reference colours, so it can only answer with a handful of values, and those colours are not tuned to a specific strip brand. Always compare with the chart on your bottle and edit the numbers before saving.
Can I keep a record of my water tests?
Yes, in the Log tab. Each reading stores date, free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, temperature and notes for a pool. You can add more than one pool, and the charts show the last 90 days of free chlorine and pH.
Can I export my log?
Yes: Export CSV for a spreadsheet and Export PDF for a table of dates and readings, both through the share sheet.
What do the reminders do?
If you switch on Weekly + seasonal reminders, you get a notification every Monday at 10:00 to test the water and one on 1 June at 10:00 about algaecide season. The times are fixed; the app has no setting to change them.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes, it runs on iPhone and iPad. There is no Mac, Apple Watch or Android version.
Does it work for a hot tub?
There is no spa mode. You can type any volume and the arithmetic still works, but nothing in the app is tuned for hot tubs, so follow your spa product labels.
Does it work offline, and where is my data?
It works offline. Pools and readings are stored only on your device, there is no account, and the app does not sync to iCloud. If you change phone, export the log first.
What can't it do?
It cannot lower alkalinity, calcium hardness or stabilizer, it has no shock mode, and the Assistant has no calcium hardness step. It also has no hot tub preset and no cloud backup.
Are there ads or purchases?
No ads and no purchases in this version, and no account. We do not promise how future versions will work.
