Dilution ratio to mL per litre for a garden sprayer
Divide 1,000 by the second number: a 1:500 dilution is 2 mL of product per litre of water, so 32 mL for a 16 litre sprayer. SprayMaster has no ratio box, so you do that one division yourself and type the result as the rate.
There is no ratio field in the app. Mix Ratio wants a rate in mL per litre. So the first half of this page is the conversion on paper; the app only comes in after.
The conversion
A litre is 1,000 mL. A ratio of 1:N, read as 1 part product to N parts water, is 1,000 ÷ N mL of product per litre of water.
| Ratio | mL per litre | Percent solution | For 16 L |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:100 | 10 | 1% | 160 mL |
| 1:200 | 5 | 0.5% | 80 mL |
| 1:250 | 4 | 0.4% | 64 mL |
| 1:500 | 2 | 0.2% | 32 mL |
| 1:1000 | 1 | 0.1% | 16 mL |
1:500 or 1+500: read the label
Some labels mean 1 part product plus 500 parts water, so 501 parts in all. Then the dose is 1,000 ÷ 501 = 1.996 mL per litre, and 31.94 mL in 16 L. Against 32 mL that is a 0.2% difference, nothing a measuring cup will show. At 1:10 it matters: 100 mL against 90.9 mL per litre. A label that says 500 times (500x) is the first reading. When it is unclear and the ratio is small, use the label's own example.
In the app
- Do the division: 1,000 ÷ 500 = 2.
- Open Mix Ratio from Calculators. It is free.
- Switch Units to Metric.
- Under Dilution, type 2 in Label Rate, leave Product Unit on mL, and put your volume in Tank Size: 16 for a full backpack, 5 for a small sprayer.
- Under Mix, Product to Add says 32 mL for 16 L, and Percent Solution 0.2%.
The percent line is a decent cross-check: 1:500 should come back 0.2%. If it says 2% you typed 20 instead of 2.
Over a pocket calculator the app mostly adds Save. Tap it and the line lands in History with date and time, handy for a recipe you mix again. The saved text is in English even if the phone is not. For one division, the app adds little. It starts to pay off when tank sizes keep changing.
Limits
No ratio entry, no ppm, no active-ingredient maths, and no water volume line: you top up to the tank mark yourself. Product units are not converted either, so a label in ounces per gallon stays in ounces. The Rate Converter in SprayMaster Pro handles percent to mL per litre, which is the only ratio-adjacent conversion it has.
Mix Ratio is free, with a banner and an interstitial every third open of Mix Ratio or Tank Mix. Pro removes the ads and adds calibration, conversion and area. iPhone only.
