How to convert a per-acre rate to per 1,000 sq ft, and back
There are 43.56 thousand square feet in an acre, so divide a per-acre rate by 43.56 to get the rate per 1,000 sq ft. 32 fl oz per acre is 0.735 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft; multiply by 43.56 to go back.
When do you need this conversion?
Farm labels usually state rates per acre. Turf, lawn and ornamental labels often state them per 1,000 square feet. If you treat lawns with a product labelled per acre, or mix a big turf job and want per-acre numbers, you convert between the two.
How many 1,000 square feet are in an acre?
One acre is 43,560 square feet, which is 43.56 blocks of 1,000 sq ft. That single number does every same-unit conversion: divide by 43.56 to go from per acre to per 1,000 sq ft, multiply by 43.56 to go back.
When the unit changes too, one more factor joins in: 16 oz in a pound and 128 fl oz in a gallon.
Conversion examples
| You have | Conversion | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 32 per acre (any unit) | ÷ 43.56 | 0.735 per 1,000 ft² |
| 1 lb/acre | × 16 ÷ 43.56 | 0.367 oz/1,000 ft² |
| 2 lb/acre | × 16 ÷ 43.56 | 0.735 oz/1,000 ft² |
| 3 oz/1,000 ft² | × 43.56 ÷ 16 | 8.17 lb/acre |
| 20 gal/acre | × 128 ÷ 43.56 | 58.77 fl oz/1,000 ft² |
One catch: lb/acre to oz/1,000 ft² gives dry-weight ounces, not fluid ounces — it is easy to grab the wrong cup over this. Keep the two apart.
Convert rates with the Rate Converter
- Open Rate Converter from Pro Calculators (it needs SprayMaster Pro).
- In Conversion, pick from the Rate basis group: /acre to /1,000 ft², lb/acre to oz/1,000 ft² or gal/acre to fl oz/1,000 ft².
- Tap Direction if you start from the per 1,000 ft² side.
- Type the number in Value and read the Result.
Mix a lawn tank straight from a per 1,000 sq ft label
You do not even have to convert to fill a tank. The free Tank Mix calculator takes the rate exactly as the label states it, and that's the route I'd pick over converting by hand.
- Open Tank Mix and set Rate Basis to Per 1,000 ft².
- Type the Label Rate and pick the Product Unit.
- Enter Tank Size and the Application Rate in GPA. If you spray 1 gal of water per 1,000 sq ft, that is 43.56 GPA.
- Turn on Size a whole job and type the lawn size in thousands of square feet: 150 for 150,000 sq ft.
| Input or result | Value |
|---|---|
| Label Rate | 0.75 fl oz per 1,000 ft² |
| Tank Size | 100 gal |
| Application Rate | 43.56 GPA (1 gal per 1,000 ft²) |
| Total Area | 150 (×1,000 ft²) |
| Product per Tank | 75 fl oz |
| Covers per Tank | 2.3 acres |
| Product for Job | 112.5 fl oz |
| Tanks for Job | 1.5 |
Mistakes that cost a lawn
- Typing 150000 for the job size. With Per 1,000 ft² the Total Area field is in thousands of square feet, so 150,000 sq ft is 150.
- Entering water volume per 1,000 sq ft in the GPA field. The application rate is always GPA; multiply gallons per 1,000 sq ft by 43.56.
- Treating dry ounces as fluid ounces after a lb/acre conversion.
- Dividing by 43,560 instead of 43.56. That gives the rate per single square foot, a thousand times smaller.
