How to measure yard or lawn square footage from satellite imagery
Set the area unit to Square Feet (ft²), trace the lawn's corners on the Satellite map with Measure > Measure Area, read Area. A lawn with sides of 65.7 ft and 56.5 ft comes out at 3,708.7 ft², much faster than dragging a wheel around the grass.
Why you need the square footage
Seed, sod, fertilizer, weed control, mulch, lawn-care quotes — all priced by the area covered. A tape does fine on a plain rectangle. An L-shaped backyard with beds cut into it and a curve along the patio is a different story, and that's where tracing on imagery wins.
How to measure lawn square footage with LandMeasure
- Open Settings > Units and set Area to Square Feet (ft²) and Distance to Feet (ft).
- On the Map tab, tap the map button at the top right and choose Satellite.
- Zoom in as far as the imagery allows, so the lawn fills the screen.
- Tap Measure > Measure Area and tap each corner of the lawn edge in order. On curved beds, add a tap every few feet along the curve.
- Drag any handle that sits off the edge. Long-press a side to insert a corner you missed.
- Read Area, then tap the green checkmark to save it in the project.
Worked example: a rectangular backyard lawn
| Figure | Value |
|---|---|
| Area | 3,708.7 ft² (344.5 m²) |
| Area in acres | 0.09 ac |
| Perimeter | 244.3 ft (74.5 m) |
Why you should not walk a small yard
Walk Mode runs on phone GPS, which is off by a few meters no matter what you do. That's nothing on a big field; on a small plot it eats the whole result. At ±4 m reported, the panel's GPS margin for this same lawn is ± 1,602.9 ft² — nearly half of the 3,708.7 ft² it measured.
Tapping corners on zoomed-in imagery sidesteps that GPS error entirely. Your accuracy then rides on how sharp the imagery is and how careful your tap was, neither of which the app can see — so ignore the GPS margin line on a tapped lawn, it isn't describing what actually limits you.
Front yard, backyard and the house in between
- No subtract tool, no holes cut in a shape — trace around the house, beds and driveway rather than the whole lot.
- One measurement per project on the free tier. Front yard and backyard want two separate projects, or LandMeasure Pro to keep both together under Total Area.
- Shade trees swallow the lawn edge on imagery. Tap where the edge would logically sit, or just grab a tape for that one stretch.
