Why you need an app to measure land area on iPhone

The built-in Measure app on your iPhone is a camera tool, good for a room or a countertop a few meters off. Apple Maps will give you a route distance but has no tool to draw a shape and spit out its area. For a lot, a field or a pasture you need something that outlines the boundary on imagery and works the area out from the corners.

That's the gap LandMeasure fills. It sits on Apple's own satellite imagery, lets you tap corners anywhere on Earth, and computes the area on the curved surface rather than a flat grid, which matters once a parcel gets large. You don't have to stand on the land. Location can be off the whole time.

How to measure land area using iPhone, step by step

  1. Choose your unit first: Settings > Units > Area, for example Acres (ac) or Hectares (ha), and Distance, for example Feet (ft) or Meters (m).
  2. Open the Map tab and tap the round map button at the top right. Pick Satellite, or Hybrid if street names help you find the place.
  3. Pan and zoom until the whole plot fills the screen.
  4. Tap Measure (the blue button at the bottom), then Measure Area. If no project is selected, fill in the New Project sheet and tap Create.
  5. Tap the first corner, then walk your finger around the edge, tapping each corner in order. After two taps the panel reminds you: Add at least 3 points to close an area.
  6. Watch Area, Perimeter and Points update. Drag a white corner handle to fine-tune its position.
  7. Tap the green checkmark in the bottom toolbar to save the measurement to the project.

Worked example: an irregular five-corner lot

This five-sided suburban lot was traced with five taps. Same shape, shown in every unit the app offers:

Five corners, one shape, computed with LandMeasure's own formula and rounding
Unit settingAreaPerimeter
Acres (ac) / Feet (ft)2.91 ac1,362.3 ft
Hectares (ha) / Meters (m)1.18 ha415.2 m
Square Meters (m²) / Meters (m)11,769.9 m²415.2 m
Square Feet (ft²) / Feet (ft)126,689.5 ft²1,362.3 ft
Square Yards (yd²) / Yards (yd)14,076.6 yd²454.1 yd

Changing the unit afterward doesn't touch the measurement itself. The saved shape just gets redrawn in the new unit — in the panel, the project list, the totals, everywhere.

How to measure acreage on a map more precisely

  • Tap the corners in order around the edge. Jumping across the shape makes two sides cross, and the app then shows a dash for Area with The outline crosses itself, so the area cannot be calculated. Move or remove a point.
  • Zoom in for each corner, then zoom out to check the whole outline. A tap that lands a few meters off on a zoomed-out map moves the line by the same amount.
  • Missed a corner? Long-press close to the side where it belongs and a new corner is inserted on that side.
  • Tapped one too many? The curved-arrow Undo button in the toolbar removes the last point; the red trash button clears them all.
  • Follow the land, not the fence, when they differ. The imagery shows what is on the ground, which is not always the legal line.

Saving and comparing measurements

Every finished measurement lands in its project on the Projects tab, where opening it shows Total Area, Perimeter and a Measurements list. One gotcha: the free version keeps just one measurement per project. Want two versions of the same plot side by side? Put them in separate projects, or get LandMeasure Pro and keep them together.

Questions and answers

Can I measure land area on iPhone without walking it?
Yes. Tap the corners on the satellite map from anywhere. You do not need to be on the land, and it works with location switched off.
Does LandMeasure work with Apple Maps?
It uses Apple's map and satellite imagery inside the app. Apple Maps itself has no area tool, which is why you measure in LandMeasure.
How many corners should I tap?
At least 3, and one at every point where the edge changes direction. Curved edges need several taps along the curve.
Is measuring land area free?
Yes. Measuring areas and distances is free; the free version keeps one measurement per project and shows ads.
