How to measure land by walking the boundary with GPS

Tap Measure > Measure Area, wait for green bars on the GPS badge, tap the walking-figure button, then just walk the edge. Back where you started, tap stop first, then the green checkmark — area and perimeter save, done.

When walking beats tapping on the map

Walking puts each point where you actually stood, not where the imagery says something sits. Good when the imagery is stale, when trees hide the edge, when the boundary follows ground markers you can't see from above, or when there's no signal for the map at all.

It's slower, though, and on a small plot, less exact. Phone GPS wanders by a few meters whatever you do, so the bigger the field, the less that wander matters next to the area.

How to measure area by walking with LandMeasure

  1. Go to the corner where you want to start and open the Map tab.
  2. Tap Measure > Measure Area (or Measure Distance for an open line).
  3. Look at the GPS badge at the top. Wait until it shows 3 or 4 green bars; that means the phone reports better than 8 m accuracy.
  4. Tap the walking-figure button in the bottom toolbar. It turns into a stop button while it records.
  5. Walk along the edge at a steady pace. The shape and the Area, Perimeter and Points figures grow as you go. You can lock the screen and put the phone in your pocket.
  6. When you are back at the start, tap the stop button.
  7. Only then tap the green checkmark to save the measurement.

What the app does with your GPS points

  • A GPS fix is used only if its accuracy is 10 m or better and it is no more than 5 seconds old.
  • Fixes less than 0.5 m from the previous one are skipped, so standing still does not pile up points.
  • When you tap stop, the track is thinned to points at least 2 m apart and saved as the shape's corners, with altitude and accuracy for each.
  • Walked points are added after any points you tapped, so you can tap the easy corners on the map and walk the part hidden under trees.

How big is the GPS error on a walked field?

Below the result, the panel adds a GPS margin line — perimeter × current GPS accuracy ÷ 2, converted to your unit. That number is the honest answer to how far off this figure could be.

GPS margin on the same walked shapes, computed with the app's formula
ShapeAreaGPS accuracyGPS margin
Five-corner lot, perimeter 415.2 m2.91 ac±5 m± 0.26 ac
Five-corner lot, perimeter 415.2 m2.91 ac±3 m± 0.15 ac
Small yard, perimeter 74.5 m3,708.7 ft²±4 m± 1,602.9 ft²

On the 2.91-acre lot, ±5 m accuracy is roughly 9% of the area. On the small yard, the margin is almost half the area — not a typo, just how badly walking scales down. As a rule: below about half an acre, don't walk it, tap it.

Tips for a clean walked boundary

  • Start in open sky, give the phone a minute to settle before your first step.
  • Keep to the edge, walk at an even pace — hesitating at corners is fine, even useful.
  • Pause a few seconds on each real corner so a point actually lands there.
  • Hold the phone away from your body, or an outer pocket; not buried in a bag at your feet.
  • Tall buildings, dense trees, steep valleys — expect fewer points and don't fight it.

Questions and answers

Can I measure land by mobile phone by walking with the screen off?
Yes. Walk Mode keeps reading GPS with the screen locked in your pocket, and stops the moment you tap stop.
Does walking need the Always location permission?
No, just While Using. Background tracking only runs while Walk Mode is actively recording, nothing else.
Is Walk Mode free?
It is, fully part of the free version.
Can I fix a walked shape afterwards?
Only up to the green checkmark — drag a corner, undo, insert a point. Tap the checkmark and that window closes; delete and redo it instead.
