How to make a KML file of a plot of land on iPhone
Measure the plot, open its project, tap the three-dot menu, Export, KML, then send it from the share sheet. What you get is a closed polygon that opens straight in Google Earth or QGIS. Export sits behind LandMeasure Pro, unless you take the one free export per rewarded video.
Why turn a plot into a KML file?
A KML file carries the shape itself, not a picture of one. Open it in Google Earth to check it against other imagery, load it into QGIS or similar GIS software, hand it to an agronomist or a contractor, or just file it away as a record of what you measured and when.
How to create a KML file with LandMeasure
- Measure the plot with Measure > Measure Area (tap the corners or walk it) and tap the green checkmark.
- Go to the Projects tab and open the project.
- Tap the three-dot menu at the top right, then Export.
- Under Vector Formats, tap KML (or GPX, GeoJSON or CSV).
- In the iOS share sheet, choose Save to Files, Mail, AirDrop or another app.
The share button at the bottom right of the Map tab exports the selected project too. On the purchase screen, free users can tap Watch ad for 1 free export when a video happens to be available, and unlock one export from that button — not always there, so don't count on it.
An empty project just says so: This project has no measurements yet. Measure an area on the map and it will be included here.
What each export format contains
| Format | What is inside | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| KML | Areas as closed polygons, paths as lines | Google Earth, QGIS |
| GeoJSON | Polygon and line features with name, area_sqm and length_m | Web maps, GIS, code |
| GPX | One track per measurement, with elevation for walked points | GPS devices, mapping apps |
| CSV | One row per point: polygon, vertex, latitude, longitude, altitude, accuracy | Spreadsheets |
One small thing worth knowing when reading a raw KML: the first corner repeats at the end to close the ring. That's just how the format wants a polygon, not a bug.
KML or PDF Report?
Files are for software; a person wants PDF Report instead, same three-dot menu. One A4 page: map picture, totals in hectares, square meters and acres, a table of every measurement. No corner coordinates in there — those stay in the vector files. One thing the rewarded video can't get you: the PDF needs LandMeasure Pro, full stop.
Things to know
- Export, not import — there's no way to load a KML back in and edit it, so this is a one-way door.
- A finished measurement can't be edited after the fact. Check the outline carefully before tapping the green checkmark.
- Data sits only on the phone, so exporting doubles as your only real backup.
