WiFi QR: frequently asked questions

Honest answers about making and scanning Wi-Fi QR codes with WiFi QR — what the free plan skips, and what no QR code, from any app, can actually do.

Is WiFi QR free?
Free to download, and there's no limit on making or showing codes on screen. The free plan saves up to 3 networks and lets you export or share the QR image once, with a small watermark. After that, watch a short ad for one more, or buy Premium — a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase — which also drops the ads.
Does the app show ads?
Yes, the free version does: a banner on most screens, an occasional full-screen ad (spaced at least 90 seconds apart, capped at 5 a day) and one when you come back to the app. Premium removes all three. It's also why the free version asks for tracking permission — say no and you lose nothing.
My Wi-Fi network is hidden. Can I still create a QR code?
Yes. Under the password field, open Advanced Options and switch on Hidden Network. The code then tells the phone the network doesn't broadcast its name, so it keeps looking anyway. That switch lives in that section, not next to the name field where you'd expect it.
Which security type should I choose?
The app offers WPA/WPA2/WPA3, WEP and Open (No Password). Not sure? Go with WPA/WPA2/WPA3 — it matches almost every home and business router out there. Pick Open (No Password) only when the network genuinely has none.
Why use a QR code to share Wi-Fi?
No typos: your guest points a camera and the phone fills in name, password and security itself. It isn't more secure than handing over a written password, though — whoever scans or photographs the code has the password, full stop, so treat the code the way you'd treat the password.
Can WiFi QR find my Wi-Fi password?
No. iOS won't let any app read a saved Wi-Fi password, and the form says so right there. Use current can fill in the network name; the password you still type once. On an iPhone you can dig it up yourself in Settings, under Wi-Fi.
Why does the app ask for my location?
Only if you tap Use current — iOS hands over the connected Wi-Fi's name only to an app with location permission. Nothing about where you are gets stored or sent. Refuse it and you just type the name by hand instead.
Do Wi-Fi QR codes expire?
No. A Wi-Fi QR code is just the network name and password written as text. It keeps working until the password or name changes on the router. Expiration inside the app is a reminder you set for yourself, not a switch that does anything to the code.
Can I make a guest code that stops working after a few days?
Not with a QR code on its own. Guest Access or an expiration date in WiFi QR just labels the network in your own list. To actually cut someone off, change the password — ideally on a separate guest network — and make a new code.
Can I scan a Wi-Fi QR code from a screenshot or photo?
Not in this app. The scanner only reads a live camera feed. If the code is on another screen, point the camera at that screen instead.
Can I see the password inside a Wi-Fi QR code?
Yes. Scan it on the Scan tab and the Scanned Network sheet shows the name, security type and the password behind dots — tap the eye to reveal it or the copy button to grab it. A code that isn't a Wi-Fi code gets rejected with a message instead.
Does Connect to Network save the network on my iPhone?
It joins through iOS's own prompt, but only as a one-time join, so iOS won't keep it in your saved networks afterwards. For something you'll use again, join from iOS Settings or the Camera app instead.
Can I put my own logo in the middle of the code?
Not your own image, no. Premium templates can drop a system icon — picked by its SF Symbol name — in the centre, with an optional white circle behind it and a size from 15% to 28% of the code. Uploading a picture or brand logo isn't on the table.
Where are my networks and passwords stored?
On your device only, inside the app. Nothing's uploaded, there's no iCloud sync, and deleting the app deletes your saved networks with it. The favourite's code is also shared with the widget on that same device. Premium lets you lock a network behind Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
Is it safe to print my Wi-Fi QR code?
As safe as printing the password itself, no more. For a public sign, set up a guest network on your router so visitors stay off your main one, and keep Show Password off if you don't want it readable in plain text too. Rotate the guest password now and then and print a fresh code.
Does it work with enterprise or school networks?
No. WiFi QR covers personal networks — WPA, WPA2, WPA3-Personal, WEP and open ones. A network that also asks for a username (802.1X) can't be packed into this kind of code.
Can I see how many people scanned my code?
No. A Wi-Fi QR code is static text, so nothing counts scans or connections. Premium's Share Analytics only counts how many times you shared a network from inside the app.
Why is my exported image smaller or larger than the number in pixels?
The resolution names are nominal sizes in points, and iOS draws the image at your screen's scale — so on most iPhones the file ends up with two or three times as many pixels per side. The free Standard size is already plenty for a phone screen or a small printed card.
