Is there a darts scoreboard app for iPad that you can read from the oche?
Yes. Dart Scoreboard runs on iPad as a normal app, with the remaining score drawn at 68 points instead of the iPhone's 44, and it turns to landscape. It is still one centred column, not a full-screen scoreboard, so it suits a table or a stand a few steps away, not a pub wall.
The question worth asking first is whether this is an iPhone app stretched to fill an iPad, because those are miserable. It is not. The score on each player card is 68 points tall on an iPad (full-width window) and 44 on an iPhone, 1.55 times bigger. That is the whole trick: a bigger number, nothing more.
The rest is the iPhone app. Same setup screen, same keypad, same rules. No iPad-only mode, nothing extra to pay for.
Portrait, landscape and the 700-point column
On iPad the app turns to all four orientations; on iPhone it stays in portrait. Either way the match screen keeps the cards, the keypad and the Undo Last Visit button in one centred column no wider than 700 points.
One limitation: put the iPad in landscape on a stand and you get that same column in the middle with empty space either side. Nothing is broken, but you do not get a giant two-panel board with half the screen per player.
On the plus side, the layout follows the window. The 68 point score shows while the window counts as regular width; in Slide Over or a narrow Split View pane it drops back to the 44 point iPhone size, so nothing looks cramped.
Setting it up on a stand
- Open the app and, under Game, pick 501 or 301. Leave Double Out on for standard rules.
- Under Players, type the names. Two are free; Add Player for a third opens the Pro screen.
- Tap Start Match. The current player's name lights up in the accent colour.
- Put the iPad where the thrower can see it without stepping off the line, then tap each dart in as it lands: Single, Double or Triple, then the number.
- Fat-fingered a score? Undo Last Visit puts the board back exactly.
Keep screen awake during a game in Settings is on by default, so a tablet leaning on a stand will not dim mid-leg. It only applies while a match is on screen.
What you read from across the room
| Round | Player A throws | A left | Player B throws | B left |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 140 | 361 | 85 | 416 |
| 2 | 100 | 261 | 60 | 356 |
| 3 | 180 | 81 | 100 | 256 |
After round 3 Player A is on 81 and the Checkout line shows above the keypad: T19, D12. Player B on 256 is above the 170 limit, so nothing shows. That line is what the person at the board can read without leaning in.
Where it falls short on iPad
- The layout is one column in every orientation, so landscape gives you margins, not a bigger board.
- Every dart is still tapped by hand. There is no camera and no voice scoring on iPad either.
- Free players see a banner on the setup, settings, history and stats screens. No ad shows during a match.
Do you need Pro on an iPad?
No. 501, 301, 701 and 1001 for two players are free for good, on iPhone and iPad alike. Pro adds Cricket, players three and four, the complete history and the two advanced stats, and removes the ads. It is worth paying for a four-player Cricket night on a tablet. For a kitchen 501 for two, it is not necessary.
