A pool water test log, with a test strip scanner

The Log tab stores each reading against a pool, charts free chlorine and pH for 90 days against a shaded target band, and exports to CSV or PDF. Scan test strip can fill in a reading from a photo, but it only picks from six reference colours per pad, so check it against your bottle's chart.

How do I add a pool and a reading?

  1. Open the Log tab and tap Create pool, or Add pool from the menu.
  2. Tap the plus button and choose Enter manually.
  3. Set the date and fill in Free chlorine (ppm), Alkalinity (ppm), pH, temperature and notes.
  4. Tap Save.

If you maintain pools for other people, switch on Client pool when adding one. It adds a client name and a contact field so you can tell them apart in the pool picker.

How do I scan a test strip?

  1. Tap the plus button and choose Scan test strip.
  2. Tap Take photo or Choose from library.
  3. Drag the green circle onto the chlorine pad, the purple one onto the pH pad and the blue one onto the alkalinity pad.
  4. Read the Estimated reading, then tap Use these values. The reading form opens pre-filled so you can correct it before you save.

The app can only answer with fixed values: chlorine 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 5 or 10 ppm; pH 6.8, 7.2, 7.4, 7.6, 7.8 or 8.2; alkalinity 0, 40, 80, 120, 180 or 240 ppm. The reference colours are illustrative and not calibrated to any strip brand, and photo lighting shifts colours. Use it to save typing, not to replace your own look at the bottle chart.

What do the charts, export and reminders do?

  • After two readings in the last 90 days, Last 90 days shows free chlorine and pH. The shaded bands are 1 to 3 ppm and 7.2 to 7.6. Alkalinity and temperature are stored but not charted.
  • Export CSV and Export PDF appear once you have a reading. The CSV holds date, free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, temperature and notes. The PDF is a table of dates and the same readings, without notes, and continues onto more pages as the log grows.
  • Turn on Weekly + seasonal reminders in Settings for a notification every Monday at 10:00 and one on 1 June at 10:00. Those times are fixed.

The camera is only asked for when you scan, and the photo itself is not saved in the log. Data stays on the device with no iCloud sync, so export now and then if the log matters to you.

Questions and answers

Is there a pool water test log template?
The Log tab works as one: date, free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, temperature and notes per reading, with CSV and PDF export.
How accurate is the strip scanner?
It is approximate. It matches each pad to one of six reference colours and does not know your strip brand.
Does it save the strip photo?
No. The picture is used to read colours and is not kept in the log.
Can I log more than one pool?
Yes, there is no limit on pools. The log keeps the newest 500 readings in total across all pools and drops older ones, so export first if you need a long history.
