Poker Timer

How often should blinds go up in poker, and how long will the tournament last?

Four hours to work with: 20-minute levels. About two: 10 minutes. A deep all-evening game: 30 minutes or more. Those are the common rules of thumb, and they map onto Poker Timer's five structures, which run 55, 130, 255, 435 and 650 minutes of clock time.

How often do blinds go up in Texas Hold'em?

There is no single rule. It comes down to how much time you have and how much actual poker you want in it: short levels push people to act fast, long ones leave room for patience and skill. What matters more than the exact number is picking a length before the first hand and letting the clock, not a person, enforce it.

Work backwards from when the game has to end. A work-night game that must stop by midnight needs shorter levels than a Saturday with no curfew. Running a Standard structure on a night that calls for Turbo is a common mistake: the four-hour mark arrives with half the field still in, forcing the rules to bend on the fly.

How long does a poker tournament last with each structure?

Poker Timer structures: level length and full clock time

Deepstack30 min15 min after level 6435 min (7 h 15 min)3:00
Long Weekend45 min20 min after level 6650 min (10 h 50 min)4:30

That clock total is just every level added up, break included. It is a ceiling, not a forecast: a real tournament ends the moment one player holds every chip, often well before the clock runs out, and pauses only push the ceiling further away. The app has no way to predict your actual finish time; it only knows what you typed into the structure.

How long do turbo poker tournaments last?

With Turbo, 10-minute levels climb from 25/50 to 1500/3000 over 12 levels, with antes from level 4. The whole clock is 130 minutes. Hyper-Turbo is harsher: 5-minute levels from 50/100 to 2000/4000, 55 minutes in total.

Pick a turbo when you want a tournament as a warm-up before a cash game, or several short tournaments in one night.

The deep stack blind structure

Deepstack uses 30-minute levels and 14 blind levels, from 25/50 to 1000/2000, with antes from level 6 and a 15-minute break after level 6 (at 3:00 on the clock). Long Weekend goes further with 45-minute levels and a 20-minute break, for all-day sessions.

How to pick and run the right structure in the app

  1. Check the time on each row of Built-in Structures: it reads like 13 levels · 130 min total.
  2. Tap the structure that fits your window and tap START.
  3. If a hand runs long or someone arrives late, tap PAUSE; the level is frozen until you tap RESUME.
  4. To stretch one level only, tap +1:00. Other levels keep their length.
  5. Want 15-minute levels? Touch and hold a free built-in, choose Duplicate to Customize, then set each Duration in the editor.

Tips for choosing a level length

  • Count on pauses. Deal time, rebuys at the table and food breaks all add up; choose a structure whose clock total is shorter than your window.
  • Give the end of the game enough levels. When the final level runs out, the clock stops with Tournament Complete instead of raising blinds again. The clock labels the last level FINAL LEVEL so you can see it coming.
  • Don't change the length mid-game. Use +1:00 or PAUSE for one-off delays; a structure change is fairer between tournaments.
  • Leave the warning at 30 seconds, or raise it (up to 120 seconds) in Settings so the dealer has time to finish the hand before the blinds rise.

Questions and answers

Should the blinds go up every 15 or 20 minutes?
For a home game of about four hours, 20 minutes is common and matches Poker Timer's Standard structure (255 minutes of clock). With 15-minute levels, the same 12 levels plus a 15-minute break take 195 minutes.
Do breaks count as levels?
Not on the clock: after the break in Standard the display reads Level 7 of 12. The break still counts in the total time, and in the home list's row count.
What happens if the game outlasts the structure?
The clock stops with Tournament Complete when the last level ends. Add extra levels in a custom structure if your games often run long, or use +1:00 to stretch the final level.
Does pausing change the total time?
The structure's total stays the same, but the real night gets longer by the time you spent paused. History records the real duration of every level, pauses included.
