Does a phone alarm work in silent mode on iPhone?
Yes. I flipped the Ring/Silent switch on mine specifically to check, and the siren played anyway, because it runs as media audio that switch doesn't touch. What does matter is the phone's volume level: the siren plays at that full level with Max Volume on Trigger on (the default), or at 75% of it with the switch off, so turn the volume up before you arm, not after.
Silent mode and alarms, in plain words
The Ring/Silent switch, or the Action button set to silent, mutes ringtones, message tones and sounds apps play as alerts. Media is a different category: music, video, and any app that declares itself as playing audio keeps going. The built-in Clock alarms work the same way.
Don't Touch plays its siren as media. A thief can't flip the switch and shut it up that way, which is one thing you don't have to remember before arming.
What still controls how loud the siren is
| Setting | Mutes the siren? | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Ring/Silent switch on silent | No | Siren still plays through the speaker |
| Phone volume (side buttons) | It sets the level | Siren plays at a share of this level |
| Max Volume on Trigger off | No | 75% of the current volume |
| Max Volume on Trigger on | No | The full current volume |
| Music from another app | No | The other audio is ducked (turned down) under the siren |
Silent mode does nothing to it. A volume slider near zero does. That's the one thing worth checking before you walk away.
How to make the alarm as loud as possible
- Open Settings in Don't Touch and check that Max Volume on Trigger is on. It is by default.
- Pick a sound under Alarm Sound. Siren and Alarm Beep are free.
- Raise the phone's volume with the side buttons.
- Tap Test Alarm (3s) to hear exactly how loud it will be.
- Unplug headphones and disconnect Bluetooth speakers you do not want it playing through; audio follows the phone's current output.
- Tap ARM and put the phone down.
Does it keep sounding once it starts?
Yes. The siren loops without end until the right PIN is entered on the ENTER PIN TO STOP screen. Locking the screen does not stop it, since the app keeps playing audio in the background, and it starts again by itself after a phone call, a Siri request or headphones being unplugged.
Common mistakes
- Blaming silent mode when the real problem is just a low volume.
- Testing with headphones in, then being confused it's quiet on the speaker.
- Switching Max Volume on Trigger off and forgetting, then wondering why the siren sounds weaker than before.
