Does a pocket alarm app really work on iPhone?

I slid my phone into a jacket pocket with Pocket Alarm armed and pulled it back out a minute later, mostly to see what would happen, and the siren hit before the phone fully cleared the fabric. It uses the iPhone's proximity sensor and fires the moment the phone goes from covered to uncovered. It is free, off by default, and keeps the screen awake on its own while armed — it just needs to stay the open, frontmost app the whole time.

What a pocket alarm app actually watches

A pocket alarm is built around the proximity sensor, the same one that blanks your screen during a call when it's near your face. Don't Touch reads it backwards from that: while armed, it watches for covered (near) switching to uncovered (far), which is exactly what happens the instant the phone slides out of a pocket or a bag's side pocket.

Pocket Alarm is a separate toggle from the motion guard, and it is off by default — switch it on in Settings before you arm.

How to turn it on

  1. Open Don't Touch and go to Settings.
  2. Switch on Pocket Alarm. Onboarding describes it as "Optional: alarms when pulled out of a pocket or bag"; the Settings toggle itself has no extra caption.
  3. Set a PIN if you haven't already, then go back to the home screen.
  4. Slide the phone into the pocket or bag pocket you'll actually use, screen toward the fabric.
  5. Tap ARM before you finish putting it away — the default 5-second countdown (adjustable 0-15s) gives you time to seat it.
  6. Pull the phone out again later and the siren should already be sounding; enter your PIN at the ENTER PIN TO STOP screen to silence it.

Does the screen need to stay on?

Don't Touch keeps the screen awake by itself while armed — it switches off the iPhone's own auto-lock for you, so you don't need to change anything in iOS Settings for this. What still ends the guard is pressing the side button, swiping to another app, or the phone being fully backgrounded: like every guard in the app, Pocket Alarm only reads the sensor while Don't Touch is open, on screen and armed, and it cannot keep watching once it's suspended.

Pairing it with the motion guard

Pocket Alarm and Motion Alarm can run at the same time. If you're walking around with the phone in your pocket, ordinary footsteps can also trip motion, so lower Motion Sensitivity for that case rather than leaving it at a desk-friendly level.

Free, and what it doesn't do

Pocket Alarm is free, with no ad or Pro requirement to turn it on. What it shares with the rest of the app: the siren loops until your PIN is entered, the trigger is logged as "Taken out of pocket" in the Intruder Log (last 3 events on the free plan, unlimited with Pro), and Pro adds a silent front-camera photo taken the instant it fires — though with the phone in a pocket, that photo is usually just fabric or a pocket interior, not a face.

Limits worth knowing before you rely on it

  • Needs Don't Touch to stay the frontmost, open app — it keeps the screen awake for you while armed, but the side button, an incoming call, or switching apps still backgrounds it and stops the guard.
  • It only detects the near-to-far transition. Arm it while the phone is already resting against the pocket or bag lining, not before you put it in.
  • Keeping the screen on for the whole outing uses noticeably more battery than a quick desk arm.
  • It is not a replacement for Find My: once a pocketed phone is actually taken and the screen eventually locks, Don't Touch can no longer locate, lock or erase it.

Questions and answers

Is there a real pocket alert app for iPhone?
Don't Touch has one: the Pocket Alarm toggle in Settings, free, off by default, using the iPhone's own proximity sensor.
What is a proximity alarm?
An alarm that reacts to the proximity sensor's near/far reading rather than motion or a cable. In Don't Touch, it fires on the near-to-far change, which matches a phone being pulled out of a pocket or bag.
Does the proximity sensor on iPhone work through a pocket?
Yes — the same sensor that blanks your screen during a call reads "near" through fabric. Don't Touch uses that near reading as the starting state and fires when it switches to "far".
Does Pocket Alarm drain the battery?
More than a quick desk arm, yes, because the screen stays on the whole time Don't Touch is armed (it disables the iPhone's auto-lock itself, so you don't have to). Keep the phone on the Don't Touch screen rather than switching apps, since that backgrounds the app and stops the guard anyway.
Can I use Pocket Alarm and Motion Alarm together?
Yes, both can be on at once. If you'll be walking with the phone pocketed, lower Motion Sensitivity first, or ordinary steps will also set off the motion guard.
