How to keep your phone safe at the gym
Arm Don't Touch on a bench or rack within sight, with the screen on, and walk to the machines. If anyone picks it up or unplugs it, a siren sounds until your PIN is entered. It makes a thief think twice; it does not stop one who is quick or willing to ignore the noise.
Locker first, alarm second
A locked locker beats everything else here. If your phone fits in a locker with a lock you trust, put it there and stop reading. An alarm app inside a closed metal door tells nobody anything.
The alarm is for the other case: you want the phone next to you for the playlist or the rest timer, and it sits on a bench between sets.
Doing it between sets
- Open Don't Touch and tap ARM. The default 5 second delay is short for a gym; raise it in Settings if you need longer to put the phone down and step away.
- Watch for Arming — put your phone down now, then lay the phone flat, screen up, on a bench or rack shelf.
- When it shows Armed. Don't touch it., walk to your station. Keep the phone where you can hear it. Leave Don't Touch on the screen.
- On return, tap DISARM and type your PIN on the Enter PIN to Disarm pad.
If the phone is charging at a wall socket, Charger Alarm is on by default and adds a trigger when the cable comes out. It only counts if the charger was in at the moment you armed.
Setting the sensitivity for a room that shakes
Free weights hit the floor, treadmills hum, benches wobble. Medium (0.5), a 0.29 g threshold from the formula 0.5 - 0.5 x 0.42, is a reasonable starting point. If dumbbells on a rack next to yours set it off during a test, move the Motion Sensitivity slider down. At 0.3 the threshold is 0.374 g, at 0.6 it is 0.248 g.
Test with Test Alarm (3s) first so you know how loud it is. Max Volume on Trigger is on by default and plays the siren at full volume; switch it off and it drops to 0.75. Leave it on at a gym; a quiet siren there gets ignored.
What it does not stop
- A phone lifted and pocketed in two seconds. The siren still starts, but the person is already walking.
- Distance and noise. The siren comes from the phone, so if you are across the room with earbuds in and music playing, you may not hear it. Keep the phone within earshot.
- Anything while the screen is off or you have switched to a music app. The guards only run while Don't Touch is open and on screen, so you cannot arm it and then use a different app for your playlist.
Is Pro worth it here
The free version does the whole job: PIN, motion, charger and siren, plus the last 3 log entries. Pro adds a front-camera photo of whoever set it off, all five sounds and no ads. On a bench the photo may well catch a face, which is the main reason to consider Pro here.
