Taxi holiday or Sunday surcharge: a percentage you switch on

A public-holiday supplement is usually a percentage of the metered fare, and the rate card of your city says which days count. In FareMeter you add it as a manual percentage surcharge and tap it on the meter when the day applies.

Why a manual switch fits holidays

A night surcharge follows the clock, so it can switch itself on at 22:00. A holiday does not follow a clock: it is a date, and it changes from year to year and from place to place. A time window in FareMeter applies every day, so a holiday or Sunday supplement is better set as a manual one that you turn on yourself.

How the percentage is worked out

  • The percentage applies to the metered fare after the minimum fare, before extras such as luggage.
  • The result is rounded to the currency, with halves rounded up.
  • Each surcharge is calculated on the metered fare on its own. They are added together and never multiplied by each other.

Metered fare 14.20, a night surcharge of 20 % and a holiday surcharge of 25 % both active:

Two surcharges on one fare
LineCalculationAmount
Metered fare14.20
Night surcharge14.20 x 20 %2.84
Holiday surcharge14.20 x 25 %3.55
Total14.20 + 2.84 + 3.5520.59

Multiplying instead (14.20 x 1.20 x 1.25) would give 21.30. If your rate card says the supplements stack, check which of the two readings it means before you charge a passenger.

Add it in FareMeter

  1. Open Settings, tap the pencil next to the tariff you drive on, and find Percentage surcharges.
  2. Tap Custom surcharge. Type a Surcharge name, for example Holiday, and the Percent.
  3. Under Applies, choose Manual switch on the meter.
  4. Tap Save.
  5. On a holiday, open the Meter tab and tap the surcharge chip. Its amount appears live under the fare and as its own line on the receipt.

Questions and answers

Do taxis charge more on public holidays?
In many cities they do, but not everywhere and not by the same amount. The rate card of your city lists the days and the percentage or amount.
Do two surcharges multiply?
In FareMeter they do not. Each percentage is taken from the metered fare and the amounts are added.
Can the holiday surcharge turn on by itself?
A time window applies every day, so for a date-based supplement use the manual switch on the Meter tab.
Is the surcharge also on the receipt?
Yes. Each active surcharge is printed as its own line with its name, percentage and amount.
