How to give a passenger a proper taxi receipt from your iPhone
Every trip you save gets a receipt with the date, route, distance, time and the full fare breakdown — no extra steps on your part. Send it as text or email for free; add Pro and you can share or print a numbered PDF with your business details and a QR code, which works well for business travellers who want a formal receipt.
Why a proper receipt matters
Business travellers need a receipt to claim the fare back, full stop, and a clear breakdown ends most arguments about the price before they start. A receipt pulled straight from the meter's own numbers is harder to dispute than anything written by hand, which is why most drivers drop the paper pad once this is set up.
What goes on the receipt
- Receipt number, date, from and to addresses, tariff, distance and duration.
- The fare split into base + distance + time, each extra on its own line, any adjustment, and the total.
- Payment method and whether it is paid.
- If you set a VAT rate, the amount excluding VAT and the VAT included in the total.
- On the PDF (Pro): your name or company, licence or badge number, tax ID, contact details, logo, your footer text and a QR code with the receipt number, date and total.
Set up your business details once
- Open Settings and tap Business Profile.
- Fill in your name, optional company, licence or badge number, tax ID, address, phone and email.
- Add a logo if you want it on the PDF header. A square image works well.
- Set the Receipt numbering prefix and a VAT rate if you charge VAT; set 0 to hide the VAT line.
- Add any legal text you must print in the receipt footer.
How to send a receipt
- After STOP, choose how the passenger paid and tap SAVE.
- Open the Trips tab and tap the trip. Its Receipt screen opens.
- Free: under Export & Print, tap Share as Text to send it by message, or Send by Email.
- Pro: tap Share PDF Invoice to send the PDF, or Print Receipt to print it on a printer your iPhone can reach.
Skip Pro and the PDF option just shows as Export PDF & Print with a lock icon, which opens the upgrade screen instead. No partial version, no watermarked preview — it is locked or it isn't.
Worked example: VAT on a receipt
VAT on a taxi fare is treated as already included in the total, so FareMeter works it backwards: VAT = total × rate ÷ (100 + rate), rounded to cents.
| VAT rate | VAT | Excl. VAT |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 2.02 | 20.18 |
| 20% | 3.70 | 18.50 |
FareMeter does not guess your tax rate for you — ask your accountant which VAT rate, if any, applies to your rides before you touch that field.
Showing the fare during the ride
While the meter runs, the fare is also visible on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. The breakdown the passenger saw on the meter is the same one that ends up on the receipt.
What people get wrong
- Sending receipts before filling in Business Profile, leaving your name and licence number blank.
- Setting a VAT rate without actually being VAT-registered.
- Deleting a trip after sending its receipt, which takes the receipt number with it.
