Run a Halloween Ghost Hunt With Your iPhone

For a 20-minute Halloween session, open GhostScope, tap Calibrate on the EMF Meter so everyone starts from the same baseline, then work through an EMF sweep, a Spirit Radar scan, an EVP attempt and a Pendulum question before you tap End & Save Session and read the Hunt Log together.

What you need

  • An iPhone or iPad with GhostScope; a second phone helps if a friend has GhostScope, Spirit Box or LiDAR Camera too.
  • A house, apartment or sleepover room you are actually allowed to be in after dark.
  • A flashlight or lamp: GhostScope does not light anything up.
  • An adult in the group if kids are taking part.

This is a group activity built on the app's real tools, not a script. One person runs the EMF Meter, one keeps time, one writes down what happens, enough to try every tool once without anyone getting bored standing still in a dark hallway.

Set a baseline before anyone starts

Open EMF Meter, stand still, and tap Calibrate. That reading becomes zero, so later changes are real changes from that spot, not just the room's background field. Calibrate again in every new room. GhostScope's full beginner walkthrough covers the EMF workflow in more depth than this session needs.

A 20-minute Halloween session

One way to fill 20 minutes with GhostScope
MinutesWhat to do in the app
0-2Calibrate the EMF Meter; assign roles (reader, timekeeper, note-taker).
2-7Start Hunt, walk the house slowly, call out the LED bar's LEVEL number.
7-10Spirit Radar sweep, say out loud that the blip positions are random.
10-14EVP Recorder: ask a question, stay silent 10-20 seconds, repeat. Play back at ½x.
14-17Pendulum: type a yes/no question, tap Ask the Pendulum; swap who asks.
17-19Mark any moment someone jumped, then End & Save Session.
19-20Open Hunt Log and read Hunt Detail out loud as a recap.

Record an EVP

Open EVP Recorder, ask a question, stay quiet 10 to 20 seconds. With a hunt already running, the recording logs itself as an EVP Recording event. Free accounts get one recording a day; slow it down with ½x before anyone calls it a voice. GhostScope's EVP guide covers the full steps.

Try the Estes Method with Spirit Box

If someone also has Spirit Box, the Estes Method is a good five-minute group bit: one person wears headphones and listens to Spirit Box's Ghost Box while another asks questions out loud, recording the whole time. The listener repeats every sound they hear, even nonsense, and the group checks it against the questions afterward. Ghost Box is a Spirit Box Pro feature, with one full session free after a rewarded ad.

Review the Hunt Log together

Back in GhostScope, tap End & Save Session, then open Hunt Log. Tap the entry for Hunt Detail: a Summary with Duration and Peak EMF, then every event in order, each EMF Spike, Note and EVP Recording, with the reading at that moment. Reading it out loud works well as a closer for the night.

What's a real reading and what's just for show

Sensor data versus recreational effect
ToolWhat the phone actually measuresWhat's a recreational effect
EMF MeterThe magnetometer's magnetic field strength, in µT.Nothing: the number is real, it just is not a ghost detector.
Spirit RadarNothing on its own; brightness reacts when a hunt is running and the reading is above 40 µT.Every blip position is random and means nothing.
PendulumHow you are holding and tilting the phone, read as gravity for 8 seconds. The idea that something else is answering.
EVP RecorderYour microphone, plainly, with no added gain.Whatever you think you hear once the audio is slowed down.

None of this finds a ghost. GhostScope says so on its own screens: the EMF Meter's own label reads Readings come from the device magnetometer. For entertainment only — not a scientific instrument., and the radar screen says Entertainment only — the blips are a visual effect, not a detection of anything. Treat the whole 20 minutes as a game with real sensor data in it, not a test anyone can fail.

Halloween ghost hunt safety checklist

  • An adult supervises if kids are taking part, especially with headphones on or near stairs.
  • Stay out of abandoned buildings, construction sites and anywhere marked private or no trespassing, a decorative radar screen is not worth a real injury.
  • Keep a flashlight or lamp on for walking between rooms; go fully dark only once everyone is seated and still.
  • Expect the EMF Meter to jump near speakers, routers, laptops and metal furniture. That is the magnetometer working, not anything paranormal.

Questions and answers

Does GhostScope really detect ghosts for Halloween?
No. It shows the iPhone's real magnetometer and microphone readings plus two playful tools, the radar and the pendulum. Nothing in it identifies a ghost; the app says so on its own screens.
Is a GhostScope ghost hunt OK for kids at a Halloween party?
The app itself has no account and nothing designed to jump-scare you, just the magnetometer, the recorder, the radar and the pendulum. Whether it fits your group is up to you: have an adult present, keep lights on for moving around, and decide together how dark to make it.
Does it work without internet, somewhere with no signal?
Yes. The EMF Meter, EVP Recorder, Spirit Radar, Pendulum and Hunt Log all run on the device and need no connection. Only the free version's ads need internet.
What's actually free for one Halloween night?
The EMF Meter, Spirit Radar, Pendulum and Hunt Log are free with no limit. EVP recording is free once a day, plus one more if you watch a rewarded ad, usually enough for a single session.
