How to use your iPhone as a night vision camera

With no light at all, the camera sees black, full stop. Dim it a little instead and an iPhone sees a lot more than your eyes do. LiDAR Camera pushes the camera to its brightest settings and adds a night-vision look; on Pro models with LiDAR, its depth view also works with the lights off.

Does iPhone have night vision?

Not in the military sense, no. There's no image intensifier or thermal sensor inside an iPhone. What it has is a very sensitive camera, and on recent models Apple's own Camera app offers Night mode for still photos, stacking several exposures into one brighter frame.

A night vision app works differently. It shows a live, brightened view you can look through, like a pair of goggles, and it can film rather than just snap a photo. Pro models add a second tool on top of that, the LiDAR Scanner, which measures distance with its own invisible light and couldn't care less whether the room lights are on.

Can an iPhone camera see in the dark?

It depends on how dark. In a room lit only by a streetlight through the curtains, a phone outside at dusk or a tent with a lantern down low, there is enough light for the camera, and a brightened view shows far more than your eyes do.

In a windowless room with the lights off, the camera sees black. Only a depth sensor helps there: the rear LiDAR Scanner on Pro models, or the front Face ID camera at arm's length. LiDAR Camera uses both when your device has them.

How LiDAR Camera brightens a dark scene

In Normal mode the app sets the camera to its highest ISO and the longest exposure its video format allows, then blends each frame with the two before it to calm the grain. On top of that it applies the look you pick, from green Night Vision to Starlight and Grayscale.

Night Vision Intensity decides how much of the look you see: at the default 75%, the picture is 75% look and 25% untouched camera image, and at 60% it's 60% look and 40% original. 60% is a reasonable starting point. Full strength looks striking in a screenshot but gets noisy fast once the room is actually dark.

Set up your iPhone as a night vision camera

  1. Open LiDAR Camera and allow the camera. On a LiDAR device it opens in LiDAR mode; tap Normal under the row of looks to use the regular camera.
  2. Tap Night Vision in the row of looks above the shutter. Try Starlight or Grayscale if you prefer less green.
  3. Tap Controls and set Night Vision Intensity. Lower it if the picture looks flat or noisy.
  4. Set Screen Brightness in the same sheet. A dim screen keeps your eyes used to the dark and makes you less visible.
  5. If the view stays black, tap the flashlight next to the shutter; it works in Normal mode.
  6. Pinch to zoom up to 10x, double-tap for 2x, and long-press the view to lock focus.
  7. Choose PHOTO under the shutter and tap the round button to take a picture.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Expecting a clear picture in a room with no light at all. Switch to LiDAR mode, or add a little light.
  • Pointing at a bright lamp. The camera is set for darkness, so bright spots blow out to white.
  • Leaving the intensity at full strength in very dark scenes. The look amplifies grain; 60-75% often reads better.
  • Forgetting the daily limit. After the free 7-day preview, the free version takes 15 photos a day; video has no limit.

Questions and answers

Is there a free night vision app for iPhone?
Yes, this one. It's free to download, every PRO feature is open for 7 days, and after that the free version keeps the camera modes, 8 looks, the depth map and video, with 15 photos a day and ads.
Does iPhone have night vision mode built in?
Recent iPhones have Night mode in the Camera app for still photos. It is not a live night-vision view with looks, and it does not use the LiDAR Scanner to show a dark room.
Why is my picture grainy?
At high ISO the sensor adds noise. The app blends three frames to reduce it; holding still, lowering Night Vision Intensity or adding a little light helps more. PRO also adds the Denoise look.
