How to add a night vision filter to a photo on iPhone
In LiDAR Camera, tap the gear icon for Settings, tap Import & Process Photo, then Choose Photo, pick a picture, tap a look such as Night Vision, then Save or Share. Five taps, give or take. It needs iOS 16 and is a PRO feature, free for everyone during the first 7 days.
When to use a night vision filter
You already have the photo. A garden at dusk, a campsite, a pet in a dim hallway, a party shot you can't retake. You just want the classic green night-vision style, a thermal look, a stark monochrome, on the picture you already took.
Haven't taken it yet? Shoot it directly in the app with the look on instead; the live camera is also brighter than a plain photo, so you get a better starting frame. Photo Import exists for pictures already sitting in your library.
How to get a night vision effect on a photo
- Open LiDAR Camera and tap the gear at the top left to open settings.
- Under Photo Import, tap Import & Process Photo.
- Tap Choose Photo and pick one picture from your library.
- Tap a look. Night Vision gives the green style; try Phosphor, Thermal or Infrared for others.
- Tap Save to add the result to Photos, or Share to send it.
Which looks work on an imported photo
Nine looks work on any photo: Night Vision, High Contrast, Denoise, Thermal, Phosphor, Infrared, Arctic, Starlight and Grayscale. Depth Map, Enhance Distant and Edge Detect are not offered, because a saved photo carries no depth from the LiDAR Scanner.
| You want | Try |
|---|---|
| Classic green night vision goggles | Night Vision |
| Old green-screen glow | Phosphor |
| Hot-and-cold colour style | Thermal |
| Red-orange infrared-photo style | Infrared |
| Cold blue tone | Arctic |
| Clean black and white | Grayscale |
| Punchy amber contrast | High Contrast |
On an imported photo Thermal colours by brightness, since there's no depth to work with: light areas look hot, dark ones cold. A style, nothing more, same as everywhere else in the app.
Tips and common mistakes
- A filter cannot recover detail from a nearly black photo. Start from a picture where you can see something.
- Too green or flat? Lower Night Vision Intensity and import again.
- If Custom Watermark is on in settings, your text is added to the result.
- No Photo Import section? It needs iOS 16 or later.
