How to record night vision video on iPhone
Open LiDAR Camera, tap VIDEO under the shutter, pick a look such as Night Vision, tap the shutter to start and again to stop. That's the whole workflow. The clip records with the look and sound baked in, then saves to Photos once you tap Save. Video is free, no watermark, no daily limit.
Can iPhone record video in the dark?
In very low light, yes. In no light, no. The camera needs something to work with: a streetlight, the moon, a lamp in another room, even the glow of a phone screen. LiDAR Camera pushes the sensor as far as it goes from there and layers the look you picked on top.
The LiDAR depth view that works in total darkness can't record video, only photos, which trips people up constantly on our support emails. For a clip in a genuinely pitch-dark room, your only option is the flashlight.
Record a night vision video step by step
- Open LiDAR Camera and allow the camera and microphone.
- Tap VIDEO under the shutter. If you were in LiDAR mode, the app moves to the regular camera and shows Switched to back camera for video.
- Tap a look in the row above the shutter: Night Vision, Starlight, Thermal or another.
- Tap Controls and set Night Vision Intensity. What you see is what gets recorded.
- Tap the round shutter. A red dot and a timer show that recording is on.
- Tap the shutter again to stop. The Video Preview opens.
- Tap Save to keep the clip; Video saved to Photos confirms it. Tap Discard to drop it.

Getting a better clip in the dark
- Brace the phone against a wall, a window frame or a tripod. At high sensitivity, every shake turns into blur and grain.
- Use whatever light there is. A dim lamp behind you gives a much cleaner picture than total darkness.
- Use the flashlight button next to the shutter for close subjects; it works in this mode.
- Lower Night Vision Intensity to 60% if the picture looks flat; you keep 40% of the natural image.
- Dim the screen with Screen Brightness in Controls so it does not light up the scene or your face.
- Pinch to zoom before you record; the regular camera zooms up to 10x.
What this video mode can't do
- Record in LiDAR or front depth mode. Those views are photo only.
- Film in a room with no light at all without the flashlight.
- Start recording on motion or run as a trail or security camera; it records only while you hold it and tap.
