PipeMaster questions and answers
Questions people ask most, before installing PipeMaster and again after using it for a week — including the stuff it flat out doesn't do.
Do I have to convert fractions to decimals?
No. The keypad has a whole-inch field, a numerator and a denominator of 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32, so you type 5 3/16" as you read it off the tape, and an improper fraction such as 17/16 carries over to 1 1/16. Results are rounded to the nearest 1/32". In millimetre mode you type mm, the value is kept to the nearest 1/32" and results show as whole millimetres.
Does PipeMaster know my bender's take-up?
Not automatically. You type your bender's take-up into the Deduct field on the 90° screens. Bender Profiles can store each tool's take-up, radius and mark style as a reference, but no calculator reads them, and adding your own profiles needs Pro.
Which bends does it cover?
90° stub-ups with deduct and gain, and offsets, are free. Rolling offsets, kicks, kick with a 90, 3-point and 4-point saddles and segmented 90s need Pro. Offsets, kicks and saddles work at the five standard angles only: 10°, 22.5°, 30°, 45° and 60°.
Does it do anything besides bending?
Yes. With Pro there are four electrical calculators: Voltage Drop, Box Fill (NEC 314.16(B)), Conduit Fill (NEC Chapter 9) and Ampacity (Table 310.16 with ambient and conductor-count factors). The Bend Reference card with multipliers and shrink per inch is free.
Can I send a job to the office?
Yes, with Pro. Each project holds a name, notes and a material list you type in (item, quantity and unit), and exports to a US Letter PDF that runs onto more pages if the list is long; any saved calculation can also be exported as a PDF from History through the share sheet. The free version allows one project and no PDF, and PDF text is in English.
Does it work with no signal in a basement?
Yes, all the calculations run on the phone. Only ads and buying or restoring Pro need a connection, and a paid Pro keeps working offline for up to 3 days since the last successful check.
Does the free version show ads?
Yes. The free version shows a banner at the bottom of the main list and of History, and a full-screen ad can appear when you open a free calculator, at most every third opening and never within 3 minutes of the last one. The calculator screens themselves carry no banner. Any Pro purchase, weekly, yearly or lifetime, removes all ads.
What is the multiplier for a 15 degree offset?
The multiplier at 15° is 3.864 and the shrink is 0.132 per inch of offset. The Offset calculator does not offer 15°, but the Bend Reference card does: set Custom Angle to 15.0° and multiply the offset depth by those two numbers yourself.
Can it calculate a segmented 90?
Yes, with Pro. Segmented 90° splits a 90 into 1 to 20 equal shots and gives the angle of each shot and the spacing between shot marks: 2 × radius × tan(half the shot angle). A 12" radius in 10 shots gives 9.00° per shot, marks 1 7/8" apart. It handles one radius, not a concentric set.
How does the ampacity calculator work?
It takes the NEC Table 310.16 base value for copper or aluminum in the 60°C, 75°C or 90°C column, then multiplies by the ambient temperature correction and the adjustment for more than three current-carrying conductors. Six #12 copper conductors in the 90°C column at 40°C give 30 A × 0.91 × 80% = 21.8 A. It does not apply the small-conductor overcurrent limits or termination temperature limits, and it does not size the breaker.
Does it follow the NEC?
The electrical calculators use published NEC tables: Chapter 9 Tables 1, 4, 5 and 8, Table 310.16 and 314.16(B). It is a calculator, not an inspection: it does not name a code edition, it does not cover every rule, and your inspector, the current code book and local amendments decide.
Can I enter 208 V or 277 V in the voltage drop calculator?
No. The voltage stepper only lands on multiples of 12, between 12 V and 600 V. That covers 120 V, 240 V and 480 V, but a 208 V, 277 V, 230 V or 400 V system is out of reach. The volts dropped do not depend on the system voltage, so you can take that figure and work out the percentage for 208 V or 277 V yourself.
Does it lay out every mark on the pipe?
No. It gives the distances: the mark for a 90, the distance between bends and shrink for an offset, the side-mark distance for a 3-point saddle and so on. Where the first mark goes depends on your measurement to the obstruction, and you apply the shrink yourself.
Does it adjust for springback?
No. There is no springback correction and no table for hydraulic or electric bender shoes. If your bender comes back a degree or two, over-bend by feel or check with a level, as you would without the app.
Will I lose my saved results if I delete the app?
Yes. History, projects and bender profiles are stored only on the iPhone, with no iCloud sync and no account. Export what you need as a PDF (Pro) before you delete the app or change phones.
Is there a free trial of Pro?
Only if the App Store offers one for a plan, and the upgrade screen shows it when it does; otherwise there is none. Prices depend on your country and are shown in the app before you buy. Restore Purchases on the same screen brings back an earlier purchase.
Is the whole app in my language?
Most of the interface is translated, but some text stays in English in every language: a few voltage drop labels, the box fill result line, History summaries and all PDF text. The electrical calculators use US units whatever the language.
