How do I get a long WhatsApp message read aloud on iPhone?
Long-press the message, tap Copy, open TTS, paste it into the text box and tap Speak. TTS does not read your chats by itself and never sees them: it reads only what you paste.
A long WhatsApp message — say, a 1,740-character update from a relative, one paragraph, no line breaks — is a good case for this. Copy, switch app, paste, Speak: under ten seconds of fiddling, then the phone can go down on the counter while it reads.
Steps
- In WhatsApp, press and hold the message and tap Copy.
- Open TTS. Tap inside Type or paste text to read aloud…, tap it again and choose Paste.
- Check Voice is in the language the message is written in.
- Tap Speak. Use Pause and Resume if you are interrupted; Stop followed by Speak starts again from the first word.
Keep TTS open with the screen on until it finishes. The app does not keep reading in the background or with the phone locked, so for a long message I raise the Auto-Lock time in iOS Settings first.
What it does not do
It does not read incoming chats automatically, does not read notifications, and cannot read voice notes or photos someone sent you (for text inside a photo, save the picture and use Scan then Photos). There is no share-to-TTS button in other apps either. Copy and paste is the whole connection, and I prefer it that way: TTS has no access to your messages.
If you copy several messages at once, WhatsApp puts the date, time and sender's name in front of each one, and the voice reads all of it. Delete those bits in the box before Speak.
Emoji are read out by name. A row of laughing faces becomes a long string of words, so clearing them out before reading helps.
Worked example: a message longer than the free day
Free users get 1,000 characters a day for Speak, and the whole box counts each time. A 1,740-character message would not fit, and the app refuses it whole rather than reading the first part.
| Situation | Characters available | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh day, no ads | 1,000 | Refused: Need More Characters |
| After 1 rewarded ad | 1,500 | Still refused |
| After 2 rewarded ads | 2,000 | Read; 260 left for the day |
| Or: delete the greeting and sign-off, read 870 now | 1,000 | Read; 130 left, second half tomorrow |
Splitting the message in two only helps across days: both halves together still cost 1,740 characters. With Watch Rewarded Ad (+500 chars) you get there today. If you do this every evening with family group messages, PRO removes the limit and the ads.
Privacy: the text stays in History
Every Speak adds the full text to Reading History, stored only on your iPhone, up to 500 entries. Handy if you want to hear it again tomorrow, less so for a private message on a shared iPad. Swipe left on the entry to delete it, or use Clear All.
When you do not need TTS
For a one-off, iOS itself can read selected text: turn on Speak Selection under Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, then select the message text and tap Speak. TTS adds things that help with long messages: a voice and Speed you choose in one tap, word highlighting to follow along, a history of what you heard, and saving the reading as an audio file.
