How many characters can you convert to speech for free on iPhone?
1,000 characters a day, free, shared between Speak and saving audio (every character in the box counts, spaces included), plus 500 more each time you finish a rewarded ad. PRO removes the limit and every ad; nothing else changes.
How the free daily limit works
Every tap of Speak or save counts the whole box, spaces and line breaks included, against what's left for the day. Go over and the whole text is refused, not trimmed, which surprised me the first time I pasted something a bit too long. Resets to 1,000 at 00:00 UTC, not local midnight, so your own reset time depends on where you live.
Worked example: a day of reading
| Action | Characters | Left afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Start of day | — | 1,000 |
| Read a 640-character text (Speak) | -640 | 360 |
| Try a 450-character text | blocked | 360 (not enough left) |
| Watch a rewarded ad (Watch Rewarded Ad (+500 chars)) | +500 | 860 |
| Read the same 450-character text | -450 | 410 |
What to do when you hit the limit
- TTS shows the Need More Characters alert.
- Tap Watch Rewarded Ad (+500 chars) for 500 more characters that day (needs internet).
- Or tap Get PRO to remove the daily limit and every ad for good.
- Or shorten the text in the box: a text over the limit is refused whole, not trimmed to fit.
What counts, what doesn't
- Both Speak and saving audio (the export icon) draw from the same daily allowance; pressing either again on the same text counts it again.
- The counter under the text box shows %lld chars typed and %lld available today, turning red under 200 characters left.
- Every installed voice, importing from File/URL/Scan, word highlighting, Study Mode, Batch Processing and Translate & Read are free, with no separate limit of their own.
- PRO (weekly, monthly, yearly, or a one-time lifetime purchase, whichever your App Store offers) removes the daily character limit and all ads.
Questions and answers
Is the 1,000-character limit per text or per day?
Per day. Reading or saving several short texts draws from the same pool: 1,000 characters plus 500 per finished rewarded ad, resetting at 00:00 UTC.
What happens if my text is longer than what I have left?
It's refused entirely; TTS never cuts a text short to fit. Shorten it, watch a rewarded ad, or upgrade to PRO.
Is everything else in the app free too?
Yes. Every installed voice (including Enhanced and Premium ones), importing from File, URL and Scan, word highlighting, Study Mode, Batch Processing and Translate & Read are all free; only the daily character count and ads are limited.
Does the limit ever go away without paying?
It resets to 1,000 characters at 00:00 UTC every day, and each rewarded ad you finish adds 500 more for that day, but it does not disappear permanently unless you get PRO.
