TTS: frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what people actually ask about TTS: Voice Aloud Reader, including the few things it genuinely cannot do. Each one stands on its own, so skip around.
Do I need an account to use TTS?
No. There is no login and no sign-up. You open the app and start reading, and your history stays on the device.
Does TTS work offline?
Reading aloud and saving audio work without internet, because the speech comes from voices installed on your iPhone or iPad. Importing a web page with URL, Translate the first time iOS downloads a language pair, ads and purchases all need a connection.
Where do the voices come from?
From iOS itself: the Voice menu lists every speech voice installed on your device, in every language. More voices, including the higher-quality Enhanced and Premium ones, are downloaded in the iOS Settings app, usually under Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices. The app's own settings screen does not show this route, so you need to go there yourself.
Can TTS read a PDF, a Word file or an EPUB book?
It reads PDFs that contain real, selectable text, plus TXT and RTF files and web pages. A scanned PDF gives no text; take screenshots of its pages and use Scan with Photos instead. Word or DOCX files cannot be picked, and EPUB files appear in the picker but a normal EPUB book loads no text in the current version.
Does it keep playing with the screen locked or in the background?
No. The app is not set up for iOS background audio, so reading is expected to stop when the screen locks or you switch apps; the Control Center player only shows while the app is open. It has no CarPlay support. Sound does play through AirPods or any connected speaker, like any other audio on the phone.
Why did the app refuse to read my text?
In the free version a text is read only if it fits in the characters left for today, and the whole text in the box counts every time you tap Speak or save audio. The alert Need More Characters offers Watch Rewarded Ad (+500 chars), Get PRO, or you can delete part of the text and try again. The text is never cut for you.
How does the daily character limit work?
Free users get 1,000 characters a day, counting spaces and line breaks, plus 500 for each rewarded ad watched to the end. The counter under the box shows how many are left, turning red below 200. It resets at 00:00 UTC, which is not midnight in most time zones.
Are these AI voices?
No. They are the speech voices built into iOS and run on your device. The app adds no voices of its own, sends nothing to a cloud voice service and cannot use Siri's voice.
Is the Premium voice a paid feature?
No. Voices marked [Premium] or [HD] are free higher-quality iOS voices you download in the iOS Settings app, and the app lets free users pick them like any other. Some screens in the app suggest otherwise; in practice PRO only removes the daily limit and the ads.
What does PRO actually remove?
Just two things: the daily character limit and the ads. It is sold as a weekly, monthly or yearly subscription, or a one-time purchase, depending on what your App Store shows you. Voices, imports, highlighting, Study, Batch, Podcast and Translate were already free before you paid anything.
Where are my saved audio files?
When saving finishes, a player opens; its share button lets you save the M4A to Files, AirDrop it or send it in a message. The app keeps no list of past exports and the files do not appear in the Files app by themselves, so share the file before you close the player.
Does it save audio as MP3?
No, it saves M4A (AAC at 128 kbps), which plays on iPhone, Mac, Windows and most Android phones. At that bitrate a minute of speech is about 0.96 MB.
Can it continue where I stopped?
Only with Pause and Resume. Stop and Speak again start from the beginning, and nothing is remembered after you close the app, so delete the part you have already heard if you want to go on later.
Can I choose a different voice for each character in Podcast mode?
Not in this version. Podcast Mode gives each name a different voice automatically from all the voices installed, so a character can end up with a voice in another language.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Speech and text recognition run on the device, and Reading History is stored only there, up to 500 entries you can delete. A URL import contacts the website to download the page, translation uses Apple's Translation framework, and ads in the free version come from Google AdMob without using the text you read.
Why does it ask to track my activity?
The tracking prompt shown once after the first run is only for ads in the free version. If you say no, ads become non-personalised and every feature keeps working.
Does it work with Siri and Shortcuts?
Yes. It adds two Shortcuts actions, Read Text and Read Clipboard, and Siri phrases that include the app name. Both open the app and read on the main screen, and they count toward the free daily characters.
Is TTS a dyslexia treatment or an assistive device?
No. It is a reading tool that speaks text and can highlight each word as it is spoken, which many readers find easier to follow. It does not diagnose or treat anything and does not replace support from a teacher or specialist.
Which devices does it run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 17.6 or later; Translate needs iOS 18. There is no Apple Watch app, widget, Mac or CarPlay version, and no iCloud sync. A separate Android app is on Google Play, and its features may differ from the iPhone version.
