How to make your iPhone read a PDF out loud

Open TTS, tap File, choose the PDF, pick a voice and tap Speak. That is the whole trick for a normal PDF. A scanned, image-only one needs one extra step through Scan, covered below.

Can an iPhone read a PDF aloud?

iOS has had speech voices built in for years; TTS just feeds them the text of whatever PDF you give it. A long planning report that would otherwise go unread can be mostly done by the end of a grocery run.

What it reads is the text layer inside the PDF, the same text you could select and copy by hand, not a picture of the page. Most PDFs exported from websites, banks or Word work fine. A photo turned into a PDF by a scanner does not, because there is no text layer to find.

Steps to have a PDF read aloud

  1. Save the PDF in the Files app or iCloud Drive if it is still in Mail or Safari.
  2. Open TTS and tap File. The iOS file picker opens.
  3. Choose the PDF. The text of every page appears in the box, replacing what was there.
  4. Open Voice and pick a voice in the language of the document.
  5. Set Speed if you want it slower or faster than 1.00x.
  6. Optional: tap the highlighter icon at the right of the File, URL and Scan row to see each word as it is spoken.
  7. Tap Speak. Use Pause and Resume to take a break without losing your place.

How do I know if my PDF has real text?

Open the PDF in the Files app and press and hold on a word. Selects? TTS can read it. Nothing highlights? The page is just an image, and File will load it as an empty box with no error message at all, which had me checking my own file the first time it happened.

The fix for a scanned PDF: screenshot each page, tap Scan, choose Photos, pick the screenshot and tap Use This Text once the preview looks right. Recognition runs on the device, one page at a time, so a long scanned document means repeating this per page.

How far do the free characters go with a PDF?

1,000 characters a day, shared between Speak and saving audio, plus 500 more per rewarded ad watched to the end. Every tap counts the whole box, spaces and line breaks included. A single dense PDF page can run past 1,000 characters on its own, so a real document rarely fits in one sitting on the free tier.

Example: free user, one day, counts from the app's own formula
ActionCharacters usedLeft today
Start of the day01,000
Read a 640-character excerpt640360
Try a 450-character passagerefused360
Watch one rewarded ad to the end+500860
Read the 450-character passage450410

A text that is longer than what is left is refused whole; it is never cut. You can delete what you do not need from the box, such as the table of contents or references, watch a rewarded ad, or upgrade to PRO, which removes the limit. The counter resets at 00:00 UTC.

Tips for a PDF that sounds natural

  • Headers, footers and page numbers are part of the page text, so they are read too. Delete the repeated ones from the box before you tap Speak.
  • Line breaks are read as spaces, so words split across a line with a hyphen may sound odd. Fix the few that matter.
  • Choose the voice before you read: a Spanish PDF read by an English voice is hard to follow.
  • Keep the app open and the screen on. The app does not read in the background, so set Auto-Lock to a longer time in iOS Settings for long documents.
  • Stop starts again from the top next time. Use Pause if you plan to come back.

Common mistakes

  • Picking a Word or EPUB file: Word files cannot be chosen, and a normal EPUB book loads no text.
  • Pasting a whole 30-page PDF on a free account: it is refused as one block. Work through it in parts.
  • Expecting the reading to continue after closing the app: there is no saved position. To listen later, save the text as an M4A file with the tray-with-arrow icon.

Questions and answers

Can the iPhone read a PDF aloud for free?
Yes, within 1,000 characters a day in the free version, plus 500 per rewarded ad. Longer documents can be read in parts over several days, or without limit with PRO.
Why does nothing appear when I import my PDF?
The PDF is probably a scan with no text layer. Take screenshots of the pages and read them with Scan and Photos.
Can I import several PDFs at once?
No, one file at a time. Each import replaces the text in the box.
Will it keep reading if I lock the screen?
No. Keep the app open with the screen on while it reads, or save the reading as an audio file to play elsewhere.
