How to shorten a LINE open chat or add-friend URL
Open URL Short, paste the link you copied from LINE into Enter URL and tap Shorten URL. Copy the short link from Shortened URL, and make a QR code for it on the same screen. The result is a link from a public shortening service, not one made by LINE itself.
What you get, and what you do not
Open chat invitations and add-friend links are long strings of letters and numbers. A shorter link is easier to copy onto a poster or to read out.
URL Short has no shortening server of its own. It sends the link to one of ten public services and shows you the result. That is a different thing from any short-link feature LINE itself offers, and the new address does not look like a LINE link. If you want a short link made by LINE itself, create it with LINE's own tools.
Steps in URL Short
- In LINE, copy the open chat invitation link or the add-friend link.
- Open URL Short and paste it into Enter URL on the Shorten tab.
- Pick a service in the Shortening Service menu. is.gd, v.gd, CleanURI and Spoo.me need no key.
- Tap Shorten URL.
- Under Shortened URL, tap Copy.
If the service refuses the link, the app retries with another service and tells you which one it used. A custom alias turns that fallback off.
Paste the whole link exactly as LINE gave it. The shortener keeps whatever you give it, so a link cut in the middle will lead nowhere. Once you have the short version, send it to yourself first and open it from there.
Check that the short link still works
Tap the short link yourself before you hand it out. URL Short also has a link check. Switch on Automatically check if your shortened links are still working. in Settings, and the status of each link shows in History.
| Check | Where | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Short link opens | Safari on your iPhone | LINE's landing page appears |
| LINE app starts | A phone with LINE installed | You reach the invitation or add-friend screen |
| Link status | History, per item | Active, broken or unknown |
| QR code reads | Test Scan | The scanned address matches the short link |
The link check reads the server's reply. It cannot tell whether LINE's app opens, so test that on a real phone.
Add a QR code
The result screen has a QR Code section. Change colours with Customize Colors, then Save to Photos. For a flyer or shop window, the Print Optimizer in the More menu gives a minimum size. Try Test Scan before printing.
A careful word about chats and ads
A short link hides its destination. Some chat or advertising platforms may treat short links with more suspicion for that reason. If you plan to use one in an ad, read the rules of that platform first. We cannot promise any platform accepts a given short link.
What the app cannot do
- It does not count clicks. For is.gd, v.gd and Bit.ly it can open the service's own public stats page; the other seven have none.
- The short link lives with the service that made it. If that service goes offline or removes it, the link stops working. Deleting the app does not break it.
- Shortening needs an internet connection.
- It cannot log in to LINE or manage your LINE links.
