How to edit song title, artist and cover art on iPhone
Convert the file, or pick one already in the app, open it on the Audio tab, tap Metadata, fill in Title, Artist and Album, then tap Save Metadata. Works on M4A and MP4 files; adding Artwork needs Pro.
Why you can't just rename the file
Renaming a file in the Files app changes the file name, full stop. It doesn’t touch the song information a music player actually reads — the Title, Artist and Album stored inside the file, or the cover picture that sits beside it. Changing those needs a tag editor, and this app has one built in for the files it converts.
How to edit song title and artist on iPhone, step by step
- Get the file onto the Audio tab: convert a video, or tap + on the Videos tab to import an M4A, MP4 or MOV file and convert it.
- Tap the file, then Metadata. The Edit Metadata screen opens with Title, Artist and Album fields.
- Fill in the correct Title, Artist and Album.
- With Pro, tap Artwork, then Choose Image to add a cover picture from your photos.
- Tap Save Metadata. The file on the Audio tab keeps those details from then on, through shares and exports alike.
Why MP3 tags are different
MP3 tags (ID3) are a genuinely different format from what M4A and MP4 use, and the app doesn’t write them yet. Need MP3 with the right title and artist anyway? Set Title, Artist and Album on the M4A first, then convert that M4A to MP3. The metadata won’t carry over automatically to the MP3 copy, so keep the M4A as your reference and treat the MP3 as the compatibility copy that just needs to play.
Adding a cover picture
Artwork sits behind Pro. From Edit Metadata, tap Artwork, then Choose Image and pick from your library. It gets saved into the M4A or MP4 alongside the text fields on Save Metadata, so any player that shows cover art will display it.
Tips and common mistakes
- This edits the file the app made, not a song already sitting in your Apple Music library.
- MP3, WAV, AIFF and AIFC can’t have their tags edited here — only M4A and MP4 can.
- Audio title, typed before converting, only names the file itself. Use Metadata afterward to actually set Artist and Album.
- Artwork needs Pro. Title, Artist and Album on M4A/MP4 stay free.
