How to merge two audio files on iPhone
Open the Tools tab, tap Merge Audio, add two files with Add File, drag them into order and tap Merge. You end up with one M4A playing the first clip then the second, saved in the Audio list and ready to export.
Can you merge audio files on iPhone?
iOS itself has no built-in way to join two recordings. This puts clips end to end: two halves of an interview, an intro before a message, or a recording that got interrupted and split into two files. The clips play one after the other, back to back — not layered on top of each other, which trips people up the first time.
Before you start: get the clips into the app
Merge Audio only sees files already on the Audio tab. A clip still as video? Convert it first. An audio file sitting in Files, a voice memo or MP3? Tap + on the Videos tab, pick it and convert it — M4A is the obvious pick since the merged output is M4A regardless.
How to combine audio files on iPhone, step by step
- Open the Tools tab and tap Merge Audio.
- Tap Add File; the Select Audio File list shows your converted files — tap the first.
- Tap Add File again and pick the second clip.
- Drag the rows into playing order; swipe a row away to drop it.
- Check Total duration:, the sum of both clips.
- Tap Merge. The Files sheet opens to save the result, and it also lands on the Audio tab on its own.
Worked example
| Clip | Length |
|---|---|
| 1. Intro | 02:15 |
| 2. Message | 03:40 |
| Total duration shown | 05:55 |
One M4A, 05:55 total: the intro, then the message straight after it.
Free vs Pro
- Free: 2 files at a time. Add a third and you’ll see Free: max %d files. Upgrade for unlimited. with 2 standing in for %d.
- Pro: any number of files, plus the Crossfade (0.5s) switch, which overlaps the end of one clip with the start of the next by half a second — a short overlap, not a gradual DJ-style fade.
- Three clips on free? Merge the first two, then merge that result with the third.
Merging three clips when you only have the free version
Free merges 2 files per run, but nothing stops a second run. Merge clip 1 and clip 2 first, then feed that result and clip 3 into a second merge.
| Merge | Files | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1st merge | Part 1 (02:15) + Part 2 (03:40) | 05:55 |
| 2nd merge | 05:55 result + Part 3 (02:05) | 08:00 |
Tips and common mistakes
- Output is always M4A. Need MP3? Import the merged file with + and convert it over.
- Clips at very different volumes stay that way — the merge doesn’t level anything for you.
- No trimming happens here. Trim each clip in the editor before you convert it, not after.
- Not a multitrack mixer. You can’t lay music under a voice with this.
