How do you trim or cut an audio file on iPhone?

Import the file with + on the Videos tab, drag the Start and End handles on the waveform to keep only what you want, pick a format and tap Convert to Audio. It saves as a new file, with no 30-second cap unless you’re making a ringtone.

Does iPhone have a built-in audio cutter?

No. iOS has no system tool for cutting a plain audio file down into a clip — Voice Memos and the Files app only play or share whole files, nothing shorter. This app fills that gap: the same waveform editor you’d use before converting also doubles as a cutter for audio you already have.

How to cut an audio file on iPhone, step by step

  1. Open the Videos tab and tap + at the top right.
  2. Pick the audio file from the Files app (MP3, WAV, AIFF or M4A); the editor opens with a player and the waveform.
  3. Drag Start to where the clip should begin, End to where it should stop. Start, End and Duration: %@ update live as you drag.
  4. Under Select format, pick the output: same format as the original for simplicity, or MP3 if it needs to play anywhere.
  5. For MP3, set the bitrate in Quality.
  6. Tap Convert to Audio. Only what sits between the handles ends up in the new file, on the Audio tab.

Worked example: cutting a 6-minute recording down to 2:30

Trimming a 06:00 file to keep 02:10–04:40
You doResult
Drag Start to 02:10Start 02:10
Drag End to 04:40End 04:40
Kept lengthDuration 02:30
MP3 128 kbps of the clip2.4 MB (vs. 5.76 MB for the whole 6 minutes)

Audio cutter vs. the Ringtone Creator

Ringtone in mind? Use the Ringtone Creator instead (Audio tab → a converted file → Ringtone): it’s built for that, exports the .m4r iOS needs, but caps the clip at 30 seconds. The trim step here, done before converting, has no such cap — it just produces a regular audio file (MP3, M4A, WAV…), never a ringtone.

What this cutter can't do

  • Trimming only happens before converting. A file already sitting on the Audio tab can’t be trimmed again — import the original once more with + for a different cut.
  • No fade in/out on the cut edges; the clip starts and stops exactly where you drag.
  • Batch conversion skips trim entirely, always whole videos. Cut files one at a time through + or the single-video editor.
  • It only cuts one continuous range. To drop a section from the middle and keep both sides, trim and convert the piece before it and the piece after it separately.

Importing and trimming a file counts as one of the 3 free conversions a day, same as any other conversion; batches and ringtones get counted on their own.

Questions and answers

How do I trim an audio file on my iPhone?
Tap + on the Videos tab, pick the file, drag Start and End on the waveform, choose a format and tap Convert to Audio. Only what’s between the handles gets kept.
Is there a free audio cutter for iPhone?
The trim step itself is free: 3 cuts a day, counted as conversions, in any output format at 64 or 128 kbps MP3. Pro drops the daily limit and opens up the higher MP3 bitrates.
How do I split an audio file on iPhone into two parts?
Import the file twice, tapping + each time, and drag the handles to a different range on each pass: once for the first half, once for the second. There’s no automatic split, just one range per conversion.
Can I cut a music file without losing quality?
Not perfectly — every conversion, trim included, extracts the audio as AAC (M4A) first, so M4A as the output stays closest to the original. MP3 adds a second lossy encode on top; pick a higher bitrate (320 kbps needs Pro) to stay as close as MP3 gets.
