How do you set a voice memo as a ringtone on iPhone?
Save the memo from Voice Memos to Files, import it into MyMP3 Converter, then open it on the Audio tab, tap Ringtone and export up to 30 seconds with Export as Ringtone (.m4r). GarageBand does the last step, because iOS lets no app add a ringtone to the list by itself.
Example: a 1:52 memo where the part worth keeping starts at 00:41. Everything below walks through getting those 30 seconds ringing on an iPhone, with the times the app shows.
First, get the memo out of Voice Memos
The converter can't see inside Voice Memos; nothing can. In Voice Memos, tap the recording, then the three-dot button, then Save to Files, and put it in On My iPhone. It keeps the memo's name, such as New Recording 14.
Make the .m4r in the app
- On the Videos tab tap + at the top right and pick the memo from Files.
- Under Select format choose M4A. It's what Voice Memos records in, and it skips the extra MP3 step. Leave Start and End alone; the ringtone screen has its own trim.
- Tap Convert to Audio. The file opens on its own screen; it's also on the Audio tab under Audio Files.
- Tap Ringtone. The Ringtone Creator opens with the waveform of the whole memo.
- Drag the left handle to where the ringtone should start. The right handle jumps to 30 seconds after it.
- Tap Export as Ringtone (.m4r) and save it in Files, On My iPhone.
One thing to expect: when the Ringtone Creator opens, it selects the whole memo. The label reads Duration: 01:52 / 30s max in orange and the export button is grey. This can look broken, but it isn't: as soon as you touch a handle, the window shrinks to 30 seconds and the button wakes up.
| Step | What the screen shows |
|---|---|
| Open Ringtone Creator | 00:00 to 01:52, Duration: 01:52 / 30s max, export greyed out |
| Drag the left handle to 00:41 | Right handle moves to 01:11 on its own |
| Check the label | Duration: 00:30 / 30s max, green tick |
| Export | New Recording 14 plus two random characters in brackets, .m4r |
Install it with GarageBand
The app spells it out under How to install your ringtone:, short version Open GarageBand → Share → Ringtone. The long version: open GarageBand, start an Audio Recorder project, open the loop browser, choose Files, find the .m4r and drag it onto the track. Back in My Songs, hold the project, tap Share, then Ringtone, then Export. When GarageBand asks, pick Standard Ringtone and you're done. This takes about two minutes the first time, mostly spent finding the loop browser.
Later you'll find it in the iPhone's Settings, under Sounds & Haptics and Ringtone, with the name you typed in GarageBand.
Without GarageBand
On the phone alone, no. GarageBand is free from Apple and it's the only route iOS opens. With a computer you can copy the .m4r to the iPhone through Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app on Windows instead. The app makes the file either way; it can't install it.
Limits worth knowing before you install
- Free: 1 ringtone a day, and the import counts as 1 of your 3 free conversions. Pro removes both limits and the ads.
- 30 seconds is the hard cap for a ringtone. A longer memo means choosing which 30 to keep.
- There is no volume boost or fade. A memo recorded from across a room can ring noticeably quieter than Apple's own tones.
- The .m4r is not added to the Audio tab. Keep it in Files so you can install it again on a new phone.
