GeoProof questions and honest answers

Direct answers, pulled from the support emails I actually get: what GeoProof records, what it can't do, what is free, and why it asks for each permission.

What exactly does GeoProof stamp on a photo?
Whatever fields the chosen template holds: coordinates in the format you pick (decimal, DMS, MGRS or UTM), date and time, street address, altitude, GPS accuracy, compass heading, speed, direction of travel, project name and custom text, plus an optional logo (Pro) and small map. It does not stamp the weather: a Weather field appears in the editor, but the app never fetches weather, so it prints nothing. The stamp is burned into an exported copy, not into the saved original.
Is a GeoProof photo proof in a legal sense?
It is evidence, not proof, and it should not be oversold to a client. GeoProof records what the phone's GPS, compass and clock reported at capture time, and shows the accuracy so you can judge it yourself. No app can confirm a phone was not fooled. Whether a photo gets accepted is up to whoever reviews it.
Does GeoProof need internet?
Not for capturing: coordinates, altitude, accuracy and heading work offline. The street address, the Map tab's map, the small map inset on exports, ads and purchases need a connection. There is no weather feature. Pro users can download OpenStreetMap tiles for an area ahead of the job in a separate Offline Maps screen in Settings.
What can I hand over at the end of a job?
For free, a PDF photo report and stamped photos one by one. With Pro, also an Excel (XLSX) or CSV spreadsheet, GPX waypoints, a KML for Google Earth, a ZIP of every stamped photo and the whole project as a .geoproof bundle. There is no GeoJSON export. A free user can watch one ad to get a single Pro export.
Is there a watermark on free photos?
Yes, a small one. Photos exported from the free version carry a GeoProof mark in the top-right corner, in addition to your own overlay, and free PDF reports end with a Made with GeoProof footer. Pro removes both and lets you add your company logo.
Does GeoProof work on iPad?
Yes. It is a universal app for iPhone and iPad with iOS 18 or later. On iPad the tab bar becomes a sidebar and the app works in every orientation; on iPhone it is portrait only.
How accurate are the coordinates?
As accurate as your iPhone's GPS at that moment, usually a few metres outdoors under open sky and tens of metres indoors, between tall buildings or under trees. The badge on the camera shows the current accuracy as ± metres and the ACC field can stamp it on the photo. Coordinates are shown to 6 decimals, but that is display precision, not accuracy.
Why doesn't the photo in my Photos app show the stamp?
GeoProof keeps the original clean and stores the overlay separately so you can change it later. To get a stamped picture, open the photo in GeoProof and tap Export, then save the copy. A PDF report or a ZIP (Pro) also uses stamped versions.
Can someone fake the location or time on a GeoProof photo?
Not the location or clock itself — GeoProof just records what iOS hands it, and a spoofed GPS or a wrong clock looks the same as a real one to the app. What it does catch is someone editing the saved image or its GPS and time fields afterward: the photo's Verification card flags that the image data has changed since capture.
Is there a time zone on the date stamp?
No. The date and time use the format year-month-day hours:minutes:seconds in the phone's local time, without a zone label. If the recipient is in another zone, write the zone in a custom text field or the caption.
Why does the time on the stamp sometimes differ from when I pressed the shutter?
The overlay time comes from the latest GPS fix, and iOS only sends a new fix after you move about 2 metres. If you stand still for a long time, the stamped time can be earlier than the shutter moment. The photo's own record in the app and its signature use the real capture time.
Why does GeoProof ask for location Always?
Only when you start recording a GPS track, a Pro feature, so the recording continues with the screen off. Taking photos needs only While Using the App.
Why does GeoProof want the microphone?
For voice notes in a project's Notes section. The camera does not record sound and nothing is recorded unless you press the voice note button.
Can I share a whole project with a colleague?
Yes, with Pro: the .geoproof project bundle packs the original photos, metadata, annotations, signatures, waypoints and notes, and your colleague opens it in GeoProof on their device. There is no live shared team workspace.
Does GeoProof back up my photos to iCloud?
Do not count on it. Full-resolution photos are stored as files on your device. To keep a copy or move work to another device, export a PDF or ZIP, or share a .geoproof bundle (Pro).
Can I delete or rename a project?
Not in the current version: photos and projects stay until the app is removed, and a project name is fixed once created. You can delete notes, custom templates, attributes, annotations and the logo.
Can I type coordinates and convert them to MGRS or UTM?
No. GeoProof shows the four formats for your current position and for your photos, but it has no box for typing or pasting coordinates.
Does the free version limit how many photos I take?
Yes: 20 camera captures per calendar month, shown as a counter next to the shutter, and the count starts again when the month changes. Photos you import from your library do not count. Pro removes the limit.
Are there feet, acres or mph?
No. GeoProof is metric only: metres for altitude, accuracy and distance, km/h for speed, square metres and hectares for area.
