How to document an insurance claim with geotagged photos on iPhone

Make one project per claim, shoot with the Insurance template and export a PDF where every photo shows its coordinates, time and accuracy. It is useful supporting evidence, not a certified record, and the free version holds only one project.

The built-in Insurance template suits assessor work. It stamps project name, date and time, coordinates, address and accuracy, plus a text line that reads Claim #: with nothing after it.

That last part falls short: the built-in line cannot be edited. To print the actual claim number you make a custom template (Create custom template, then a Custom text field reading something like Claim #: 2026-0417) and free allows exactly one saved custom template. Easier: put the number in the project name, which is also a stamp field.

Setting up a claim

  1. Projects tab, tap +, then New Project. Name it with the claim number. Choose Insurance under Type.
  2. Under Attributes add pairs such as insured name, policy number, date of loss.
  3. On the Camera tab check the GPS badge. Indoors it can read tens of metres off, so wait for it to settle. The stamped line ACC ±N m shows what iOS reported, and a reviewer sees it too.
  4. Shoot a wide shot of the building first, then close-ups of each damaged item. Use Caption on every photo: room, item, what you see.
  5. Use Annotate for an arrow or box on the crack or the stain. The marks sit on top; the original stays untouched.
  6. Open Export Report, set Photos per page, fill Signed by (optional) and generate the PDF Report.

What ends up on each photo

Each PDF cell has the caption, capture date and time, the coordinate in the format set in Settings, altitude, accuracy and a Verified capture line when the app's signature check passes. The signature covers the image bytes, latitude, longitude, altitude, capture time and photo id. It does not cover the address, captions or accuracy.

A claim of 14 photos prints 4 pages at 4 per page, 7 at 2 per page or 14 at 1 per page. With 20 free captures a month, that leaves 6 for the next job, and the one-project limit means a second claim needs Pro.

What it cannot prove

It cannot tell if GPS was spoofed or the phone clock was changed; it records what iOS reports. It can show that a photo captured in the app was changed afterwards, but only inside GeoProof. The exported JPEG and the PDF carry no verifiable signature of their own.

Photos you import from the library keep EXIF position and date, and are not signed. Projects cannot be deleted or renamed. Metric units only.

Questions and answers

Is GeoProof accepted by insurers?
We cannot say. It records GPS position, time and accuracy and signs each photo, but no app can make a photo certified evidence. Check what your insurer or firm requires.
Can I handle several claims at once?
Only with Pro. The free version holds one project, so a second claim would go into the same project.
How do I add the claim number to the photo?
Put it in the project name, which can be stamped, or make a custom template with a Custom text line. The built-in Insurance template prints Claim #: without a number.
Can I send the report without paying?
Yes. The PDF is free, with a Made with GeoProof footer and no company logo. Spreadsheets and ZIP exports are Pro.
