GeoProof

Is there a construction diary app on iPhone, and is GeoProof one?

Only half of one. GeoProof records the photographic side of a site visit (where, when, what it looked like) in a project with notes and a PDF, but it has no weather, no crew or hours fields and no daily form, so it will not replace a legally required Bautagebuch or site diary.

Diary items against the app

A German Bautagebuch, a UK site diary or a US daily report all ask for roughly the same things each day: date, weather, who was on site, what was done, delays, instructions given, visitors, photos. That list was checked against the app one line at a time, and the photo half is the only half that is really there.

Typical daily-record items against GeoProof
ItemIn GeoProof?
Date and time of each photoYes, stamped on the photo and kept in the record
Where each photo was takenYes: coordinates, address (needs internet), accuracy, compass heading
Photos with captions and marked-up problemsYes, with Caption and Annotate
Free-text and voice notesYes, under Notes in the project
Client, job number, site managerYes, as Attributes (field and value pairs)
WeatherNo. A Weather field is listed in the template editor but prints nothing
Workers on site, hours, equipmentNo structured fields; you could type them into a note
Signature of the site managerOne signer name and date on the last page of the PDF

One day on site

  1. Open the Projects tab, tap + and create the site with New Project. Pick Construction as the Type so the camera defaults to the Construction template (project name, date and time, coordinates, address, altitude, accuracy in an orange bar).
  2. Add the job number and client under Attributes. They print under the title of the PDF.
  3. Shoot from the Camera tab. Wait until the GPS badge shows ±15 m or better before you press the shutter.
  4. Back in the project, write what happened in Notes. The mic button records a Voice note if your hands are dirty.
  5. At the end of the week open Export Report, choose 4 — grid, type a name under Signed by (optional) and generate the PDF Report.

Notes stay inside the app. They are not printed in the PDF; only the photo captions are. Put the sentence that matters into the caption.

Counting photos

Free allows 20 camera captures a month and one project. If a visit takes six photos, that is 3 visits (18 photos) with 2 left. Those 18 photos fill 5 pages at 4 per page, 9 pages at 2 per page or 18 pages at 1 per page, and the last page also carries the signature line.

Photos imported from your library do not count toward the 20, so a crew member's own photos can be added without spending the allowance. They arrive without accuracy, heading or address.

What is missing

There is no template for the daily page, no calendar view and no search by date. Search covers caption, project name, address, tags and coordinate text. A project cannot be renamed after you create it, and photos or projects cannot be deleted in the current version, so name the job carefully, for example the street address plus a number.

The photo stamp is burned into the exported copy and the PDF; the original inside the app stays clean. Free exports carry a small GeoProof mark and the PDF footer says Made with GeoProof. Pro removes both, adds company name and logo, allows several sites and adds Excel, CSV, GPX and KML exports.

Questions and answers

Can GeoProof replace a paper construction diary?
No. It has no weather, crew, hours or delay fields and no daily form. It covers the photos and notes, and gives you a PDF photo report with place and time on each picture.
Does the PDF include my notes?
No. The PDF shows the project title, description, attributes, then each photo with its caption, date and time, coordinates, altitude, accuracy and verification result. Notes remain in the app.
Is there a free site diary app version?
GeoProof is free to download with ads, 20 captures a month and one project. Pro removes the limits and ads.
Can I search my photos by date?
No. Search finds captions, project names, addresses, tags and coordinate text, but there is no date filter.
Does it need internet on site?
Not to take photos. Coordinates, accuracy and time come from the phone. The street address and map tiles do need a connection.
