How do you use the pomodoro technique for exams when you study all day?
Run one custom 50/10/30 mode in the morning and the free Study mode (25/5/15) in the afternoon. That combination comes to 7 h 40 min at the desk and 5 h 50 min of real focus, which is what Total Time shows under Today.
One exam study day, block by block
Heavy syllabus topics in the morning, review and practice questions after lunch, the split most people sitting a competitive exam end up with. Two modes, and no numbers need changing once the day starts.
| Block | Clock time | Focus | Breaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning, custom mode 50/10/30, 3 blocks | 08:30 to 11:50 | 150 min | 50 min |
| Afternoon, Study cycle 1 (4 blocks) | 15:00 to 17:10 | 100 min | 30 min |
| Afternoon, Study cycle 2 (4 blocks) | 17:10 to 19:20 | 100 min | 30 min |
| Whole day, 11 focus blocks | 7 h 40 min at the desk | 350 min | 110 min |
With Today picked in Stats, the cards read Total Time 5h 50m, Average 31m and Completed 100%. The average can look wrong at first glance. It isn't: 350 minutes over 11 blocks mixes 50s and 25s, and the app rounds down.
Build the morning mode once
- Open the Modes tab and tap Add Custom Mode.
- Give it a Name, for example "Syllabus", and an emoji.
- Under Durations, set focus to 50, short break to 10 and long break to 30.
- Under Cycle, set the sessions to 3.
- Check the Preview line. It should read
Cycle: 50m focus → 10m break × 3 → 30m long break. Save, then tap the mode to select it.
With 4 sessions, the long break arrives 3 h 50 min in, and by the fourth 50-minute block focus commonly fades. With 3, it comes at 2 h 50 min, which holds up better.
Those lengths match Deep Work, which is a Premium preset. You can rent it with Watch Video, but the rental says Unlock for 1 hour and one Deep Work cycle runs 4 h 20 min. The one free custom mode does the same job for the whole day, so the video rental is not worth bothering with.
Afternoon: switch to Study
Tap Study in Modes. Shorter blocks suit review and practice tests better after lunch, when a 50-minute block is a fight. In the free version a full-screen ad can show when you switch modes, so it's worth switching once, at lunch, and not between blocks.
Before each block, tap Add task label on the Timer tab and write the topic number. The label is saved with the session, so at night the list tells you which topics got time and which got skipped again.
How many pomodoros a day for studying?
Eleven is a ceiling, not a target. 8 Study blocks, 200 minutes, is a pace that holds up for weeks. A day that repeats tomorrow beats one huge one-off.
Daily totals in the free version, and where it runs short
Today, Day Streak and the Recent Pomodoros list are free. The list is the limiting part: it shows only the 5 newest rows, breaks included, so after a day like this one it reads +17 more sessions with Upgrade to see full history underneath. Eleven focus blocks and eleven breaks is 22 saved phases, and the free list hides most of them.
- History and the heatmap stop at Last 7 days without Premium, and the bar chart under This Week is locked.
- With Premium, Focus Goals lets you set a Daily Goal; a 6-hour preset finishing a day at 350/360 reads as 97%.
- Premium also exports sessions as CSV or JSON, which is the only way to keep a months-long record outside the phone.
- No sync: an iPad and an iPhone each keep their own totals.
- The square stop button throws the block away. Use Skip if you leave early; it keeps the minutes you did.
None of this needs a purchase. Study plus one custom mode covers the whole day, and the countdown keeps running on a library desk with the phone locked and face down. Premium is worth it mainly for the months of history or the goal ring.
