Virtual dice roller: roll 2, 5 or up to 100 dice on your iPhone
Open Dice in Random, set how many dice you need with the minus and plus buttons (1 to 100), and tap Generate or tap the dice to roll them all. Each die shows a real face from 1 to 6, and every face has a 16.67% chance. The app shows the faces; you add them up.
When a dice roller app helps
The dice from a board game box vanish after the first move, every single time. A dice roller on the phone replaces them for family games, for a maths lesson on probability, or for games that call for more dice at once than anyone keeps in a drawer.
Rolling on a screen is also quiet and never falls under the sofa, which helps with young children or on a train.
How to roll dice on your iPhone
- Open Random and tap Dice in the Home list. It starts with 6 dice.
- Tap the minus button to remove dice or the plus button to add them. You can have from 1 to 100.
- Tap Generate, or tap anywhere on the dice, to roll all of them.
- Read the faces in the grid, three dice per row, and roll again when it is the next player's turn.
For two dice, tap minus four times from the starting 6. It is easy to miss this and roll six dice for a two-dice game until someone points out the count. For a single die, keep tapping minus until one is left.
Is the virtual dice roller fair?
Each die is rolled on its own with the iPhone's system random generator, and every face from 1 to 6 has the same chance. A worn or badly made plastic die can favour a side; this one cannot. The app ships with tests that check the faces come out evenly.
The odds of common rolls
These numbers tell you what to expect, so you can tell bad luck from a problem.
| Roll | Dice | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| A given face on one die, for example a 6 | 1 | 16.67% |
| At least one 6 | 2 | 30.6% |
| Doubles (both dice the same) | 2 | 16.67% |
| At least one 6 | 6 | 66.5% |
| All five dice the same | 5 | 0.0772% |
So even with 6 dice, about one roll in three has no 6 at all. That is normal, not a broken roller.
Tips for games
- Set the dice count once at the start. The screen keeps it while you play, so each player just taps to roll.
- For games where each player rolls a different number of dice, keep the largest number and have players ignore the extra dice, or change the count with plus and minus before each turn.
- Pass the phone around the table: tapping the dice is quicker than finding the button.
- In a dark room, turn on Dark Mode in Settings; the dice switch to light faces on a dark background.
What it does not do
The dice roller shows each face but does not add a total, keep score or remember earlier rolls. It only has ordinary six-sided dice, so it is not a roller for games that need four-, eight-, ten-, twelve- or twenty-sided dice. The free version shows a banner on this screen and sometimes a full-screen ad when you open it; Remove Ads removes both.
