Flip a coin heads or tails, get a yes or no, or play rock paper scissors
In Random, open Coin toss and tap the coin for heads or tails, open Yes or no for a plain answer, or open Rock Paper Scissors and set up to 4 hands. Each one is decided in a tap, with even odds: 50/50 for the coin and for yes or no, one in three for each hand.
Three ways to settle a decision
Who goes first, which film tonight, whose turn to pay. A coin is the classic, but a physical coin is not always on hand, and a real flip can be caught or called badly anyway. These three generators give an answer everyone at the table can see on the screen at once.
- Coin toss: two options, 50/50, with a coin that flips on screen.
- Yes or no: one question, answered Yes or No, 50/50.
- Rock Paper Scissors: 1 to 4 random hands, for choosing between up to four people.
How to flip a coin: heads or tails
- Open Random and tap Coin toss in the Home list.
- Agree out loud who takes heads and who takes tails.
- Tap the coin or Generate. The coin flips and lands on heads or tails.
- Tap again for another flip. There is no running score, so keep count yourself for two out of three.
Each flip is a fresh 50/50 draw. Three heads in a row has a 12.5% chance, so it happens about once in every eight sets of three flips.
Yes or no generator
- Open Yes or no from the Home list.
- Think of a question that can be answered yes or no.
- Tap the screen or Generate. The answer appears as Yes or No in the app's language.
It is a coin flip with words, not a fortune teller. It is useful when you are stuck between two options and want the decision out of your hands, or when you notice you were hoping for one answer.
Rock paper scissors generator for 2, 3 or 4 players
- Open Rock Paper Scissors from the Home list.
- Tap the plus or minus buttons to show one hand per player, from 1 to 4.
- Decide who owns which hand, for example from left to right.
- Tap Generate or the screen. Each hand turns into a random rock, paper or scissors.
- Read the winner yourselves: rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock.
The app shows the hands but does not name the winner. With three or four hands, a round with all three symbols or all the same symbol is a draw, and you throw again.
| Hands | Outcome | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Same symbol (draw) | 33.33% |
| 3 | All three different (draw) | 22.22% |
| 3 | All the same (draw) | 11.11% |
| 3 | A clear result | 66.67% |
| 4 | All the same (draw) | 3.7% |
| 4 | All three symbols shown (draw) | 44.44% |
Common mistakes
- Calling heads or tails after the tap: agree before you flip, or the loser will always ask for a re-flip.
- Expecting a streak to break: after four tails, the next flip is still 50/50.
- Using a single hand in rock paper scissors to play against the phone: the app does not play a hand of its own, so throw yours and compare.
