Random letter generator A-Z, and the other one-tap generators
Open Letter in Random and tap the screen: a capital letter from A to Z appears, each of the 26 with a 3.85% chance. Tap again for the next round. The same screen family also gives you a random playing card, a colour with its hex code, a date between two dates and a random point on the map.
When you need a random letter
Category games where everyone names a city, an animal and a food starting with the same letter. Spelling drills. Picking the initial for a baby-name game. The letter should come from nowhere, so nobody at the table had time to prepare an answer in advance.
How to get a random letter
- Open Random and tap Letter in the Home list.
- Tap anywhere on the screen, or tap Generate. A large capital letter appears.
- Play the round, then tap again for the next letter.
Every letter from A to Z has the same chance, including the awkward ones such as Q, X and Z. Some groups like that; others prefer to skip them, see below.
Random letter generator with no repeats?
There is no no-repeat setting: each tap draws from all 26 letters, so a letter can return in the same game. Repeats come quickly.
| Rounds | Chance of at least one repeated letter |
|---|---|
| 5 | 33.6% |
| 6 | 46.3% |
- Write the letters already played on the score sheet and tap again if one comes back.
- Agree before the game which hard letters you skip, and simply tap again when one appears.
- The letters are the English alphabet A to Z only, without accented letters.
The other one-tap generators
Four more generators work the same way: open them from the Home list and tap.
Random card
Card shows one card from a French deck of 54: the usual 52 plus a black and a red joker. Every card is equally likely, 1.85% each; a joker turns up 3.7% of the time and any ace 7.41%. The card goes back in the deck after each draw, so the same card can come up again. It shows single cards and cannot deal a hand or leave the jokers out.
Random colour with hex code
Color fills the whole screen with a random colour and shows its hex code, such as #3399E6 for a mid blue, written in white or black depending on how light the colour is behind it. There are 16,777,216 possible codes, but no colour names, no palettes and no copy button: read the code off the screen or screenshot it.
Random date between two dates
Date & Time picks a random moment between the Start and End dates you choose and shows the date and the time. It opens with the last five years, so each of those years has about a 20% chance. Swap the dates by mistake and the app puts them in order for you.
Random location on the map
Map drops a pin at a random point on the world map and zooms to it; pan and zoom to explore. It needs internet to show the map and never uses your own location. Because the Earth is mostly water, many pins land in the sea, and polar regions come up more than their size suggests. The pin shows no place name or coordinates.
| Area | Share of pins | Share of Earth's surface |
|---|---|---|
| Beyond 60 degrees north or south | 29.4% | 13.4% |
| Within 30 degrees of the equator | 35.3% | 50% |
