Can You Run a Tabata Timer on Apple Watch?

Not on its own — the phone can't stay behind in the locker room. Choose Tabata on the iPhone once, and from there the Apple Watch app mirrors the countdown and lets you start, pause, skip and stop from your wrist, with a haptic tap every time the phase changes.

How the Apple Watch app works with Tabata

It's a remote for the timer on your iPhone, not a separate timer of its own — worth saying plainly, since the naming makes it look like a standalone app. It shows the preset name, Round 2 / 5-style text, a live countdown ring and the current phase, and taps your wrist at every phase change. The bell itself still comes from the iPhone's speaker, not the Watch.

Setting up a Tabata you control from the Watch

  1. On the iPhone, tap the list icon for Setup, tap the HIIT chip and choose Tabata.
  2. Open the Boxing Timer app on your Apple Watch; it shows the Tabata preset name and READY, waiting for you.
  3. Tap the centre Play button on the Watch to start the 8 rounds of 20 seconds on, 10 off, straight from your wrist.
  4. Use the Watch's Stop, Play/Pause and Skip buttons through the whole session; you never have to pick the phone back up.
  5. Feel a haptic tap on the wrist at the start of every round and rest; the bell for the room still comes from the iPhone's speaker.

What the Apple Watch app can't do

  • It can't pick a different preset or build a Custom Timer; the preset is always whatever is selected on the iPhone.
  • It needs the iPhone app running and reachable over the connection between the two devices; if the iPhone is out of range or the app is force-quit, the Watch buttons stop responding.
  • It doesn't speak the Pro Voice Coach's round announcements or combo calls; those are audio from the iPhone only.

Why control Tabata from the Watch at all

A Tabata round is only 20 seconds of work and 10 of rest, so reaching for the phone to skip or pause breaks the rhythm. With the Watch doing Stop, Play/Pause and Skip, and a haptic marking every switch, you can leave the iPhone on a shelf across the gym and still never miss a round.

Free or Pro?

The Apple Watch remote itself is completely free: starting, pausing, skipping and stopping from the wrist, and the haptic on every phase change, work on any Tabata or other preset without Pro. Pro only adds things that play through the iPhone (spoken round announcements, extra bell sounds, the weekly training chart) and removing ads.

Questions and answers

Can I start a Tabata timer directly on Apple Watch, without the iPhone?
No. Choose the Tabata preset on the iPhone first. After that, you can start, pause, skip and stop that same session entirely from the Watch.
Does the Apple Watch play the bell sound?
No. This matters most when training somewhere too loud to hear the phone. The bell stays on the iPhone's speaker; the Watch gives you a haptic tap instead, which you'll feel even when you can't hear a thing.
Do I need the iPhone nearby for the Watch to control the timer?
Yes. The Watch app sends its commands to the iPhone app over their device connection, so the iPhone needs to be running and reachable, not necessarily unlocked or in your hand.
Is the Apple Watch remote part of Pro?
No, it's free. Pro adds extras that run on the iPhone side, like the spoken round announcements and extra bell sounds, not anything on the Watch.
